For this assignment you will be required to engage in a structured exercise of

visual analysis of a specific art, architecture or


landscape object and submit a report in the form of one or two succinct
paragraphs. The object of analysis must be a physical
object located in Perth and it must be analysed according to formal conventions.
This assessment essentially tests your ability
to visually and aesthetically analyse objects. You will be required to identify and
examine the affects of elements such as scale,
texture, colour, form and frame. Assessment criteria is based on your ability to
clearly describe the formal elements of the
object in a concise manner and consider how the formal qualities interrelate to
affect the viewer. Further information will be
communicated in tutorial.

Public Art : Eliza Statue

Date Unveiled : The Eliza Statue was unveiled by Perth Lord
Mayor, Peter Nattrass, Monday 15th of October 2007.
Description of the Eliza Statue : A larger than life bronze
statue of a bathing girl, with arms up as if about to take a
plunge into the Swan River at Crawley Bay. At present lightly
covered in shag (big large bird) poop.
Location : On Mounts Bay Road (near the Swan Brewery)
right there in the Swan River, you can't miss her as she is
usually (of late) dolled up in a costume.
History behind the Eliza Statue : The Eliza statue
commemorates the Crawley baths which were a popular place
to swim between 1915 - 1960's. The baths were opened in
1914 and became a place where hundreds of children learnt to
swim. Olympic legends Murray Rose and Jon Hendricks were
Crawley bath regulars. Local artist Tony Jones and his son Ben
were commissioned to create a fitting statue for the location.
Eliza was unveiled by the exiting Perth Lord Mayor, Peter
Nattrass, Monday 15th of October 2007. Included in the
unveiling presentation was a male and female dressed in
1940's swim wear.

The eliza statue is situated in the swan river next to mounts
bay road and near the swan brewery. The statue
commemorates the crawley baths which were a popular
swimming area between 1915 and the 1960s.The baths, which
were opened in 1914, became the area in which hundreds of
children learned to swim and Olympic swimmers including
murray rose and jon Hendricks trained. Local perth artist tony
jones and his son ben jones were commissioned to create a
statue which marked the area as a historic part of the swan
river. Eliza was unveiled by the then perth lord mayor on the

October 2007 in a ceremony in which two perth swimmers
dressed in 1940s swim wear and stood by the statue. The
eliza statue is composed of the bronze female figure, standing
upon a wood and steel plynthand mounted on a steel pylon 15
meteres off the shore. The statue stands 2.2 metres above the
water level and is fitted with its own solar panels which allow it
to be lit at night. The figure in the statue is a woman, dressed
in 1940s swimwear, arms outstretched and angled slightly
upwards, toes pointed as if she is about to dive into the water.
The eliza statues prominent positioning, clesrly visible and eye
catching from the road and welcoming pose has caught the
attention of many passers by since her unveiling. The statue
has become a more interactive piece of street art and is
regularly dressed up in different costumes to represent
different schools, sports teams, university colleges and
recognize events such as international womens day, breast
cancer awareness, Melbourne cup race day and other such
events. This aspect of the statue has earned it a reputation to
be one of perths local and unique attractions and attracted
people to be inspired by and appreciate public art and the way
it can influence the overall feel and appearance of a certain
area.
