An Introduction
The study of past human societies through
recovery and analysis of artifacts.
What is archaeology?
Archaeology is a scientific study
of history carried out by analyzing
physical remains of human activity in
the past.

An archaeologist is a scientist
who studies the past by finding and
digging up whats left of ancient
civilizations.

Most civilizations have art, jewelry
and music.

How do archaeologists find places
and things?
Archaeologists use scientific methods to
locate sites of archaeological potential both
on land and underwater. They excavate,
analyze, and record archaeological finds
systematically, and use this information to
explain the way people lived in the past.
Old records, scrolls, books,
diaries, myths and legends
Many sites are found when people go looking for
a place mentioned in a story or diary.
Often artifacts are found by accident in fields or
