Block Play

Children: Macey, Ryan and Willow

Date: 10/9/12
Context: The children are taking it in turns at hiding in the trolley while the other child covers them in with blocks.
Observation:
Macey and Willow are sitting in the trolley and Ryan covers them in with the blocks. Once they are covered in the girls
push the blocks and they come crashing down and Macey gets out.
Macey says, Ryan its your turn you get in and I will put the blocks over.
Ryan gets in the trolley and Macey begins to cover them up with block once they are covered. She steps to the side and
says, Go push them down. Willow and Ryan push the block down Willow goes to get out of the trolley to let Macey have
another turn and Macey says, No its ok Willow I will do the blocks again.
Willow gets back in and Macey stacks the blocks up again. Macey continues to stack the blocks and continues to let
Willow and Ryan stay in the trolley for the following turns.
Analysis:
Personal Plane (information about the individual children): Macey is able to stack the blocks and chooses to continue
doing so instead of taking her turn in the trolley again.
Interpersonal Plane (information about relationships): Macey, Ryan and Willow do not play together regularly but appear
to work well together. Macey enjoys covering them in the trolley and can see how much enjoyment Willow and Ryan are
getting out of it. She insists on letting them stay in the trolley.
Contextual Plane (information about the cultural and institutional processes): The centre encourages block play and has
the large blocks to play with outdoors. They are a valued resource for the centre and are something that is used every day
by all children. The blocks encourage the children to be creative and allow groups of children to play together.
