FORM 5 PEKA

Title: Electricity (Ohms Law)
Inference: The potential difference across the conductor depends on the current
Hypothesis: When the current passing through a metal wire increases, the potential
difference across the metal wire also increases.
Aim: To investigate the relationship between current and potential difference for a
metal core.
Variables:
a. Manipulated: Currrent, I
b. Responding: Potential Difference, V
c. Fixed: Length and type of metal, temperature of the metal wire
Materials: 50cm contantan wire (s.w.g 26), connecting wires
Apparatus: Ammeter (0 1A), Voltmeter (0 5V), battery holder, three 1.5V cells, rheostat
and switch.

Steps:
1. The electrical circuit was set up as shown in the figure above.
2. The battery, switch, rheostat, constantan wire and the ammeter are
connected in a series circuit.
3. A voltmeter was connected parallel to the constantan wire to measure the

potential difference, V across the constantan wire.
4. The switch was closed and the rheostat was adjusted until the ammeter
shows a reading I = 0.1A.
5. The voltmeter measuring the potential difference across XY was read
and recorded in the table as V.
6. Step 4 and 5 was repeated for the ammeter reading with the current
reading I = 0.2A, 0.3A, 0.4A, 0.5A and 0.6A.
7. The corresponding values for the potential difference, V and the current, I
was recorded in a table.
8. A graph of V against I was plotted.
9. From the graph obtained, the resistance of the conductor was obtained.

Calculation: From the formula, V=IR

Hence, the resistance of the conductor, R is calculated from the gradient of the
potential difference, V against current, I graph.

From the graph, the gradient, m =
