1.0 INTRODUCTION

In this report the acknowledgement of the experience in both maintenance and design of
aviation industry will be explored. Generally, aircraft maintenance is related to first line, second
line and depot maintenance. First line and second line maintenance type perform a scheduled
maintenance for a serviceable aircraft in the area of pre flight check, post flight check, snag
rectification, minor repair, 50 hours check and others, which had been predetermined in the
maintenance schedule. Depot maintenance carried out major repair up to stripping the whole skin
and structures of the aircraft, alignment, overhaul and modification. Maintenance planning is
important in this industry in order to ensure a sufficient number of aircraft is serviceable and hence
may increase the operating time compare with the maintenance time. The most important element
in planning is the management of spares and the workforce.
In the aviation design industry, broader scopes are covered since the designer or the
manufacturer have to take consideration of factors such as ease of fabrication, cost reduction,
customer requirement, ease of maintenance, versatile, risk management and time frame other than
basic technical requirements. In order to produce a good design, a designer has to understand the
needs of the product to the customer or to target customer. A sophisticated design may not be a
good design if the customer does not like it.
For any structural design, strength of the part has to be ensured that it will survive the loads
during the emergency landing condition of an aircraft. Therefore, in the design stage, safety factors
are introduced for the structural parts to withstand more than the known ultimate load during any
emergency conditions. Normally ultimate safety factors for aviation are 1.5 from the limit load.
