WHAT IS GLOBAL WARMING?

Global warming is when the earth heats up (the

temperature rises)
It happens when greenhouse gases (carbon dioxide,
water vapor, nitrous oxide, and methane) trap heat
and light from the sun in the earths atmosphere,
which increases the temperature
The last 30 years has seen the highest surface
temperatures recorded in history
Glaciers are melting rapidly
Ocean temperatures have increased
Sea levels have risen almost one foot

WHAT IS GREENHOUSE EFFECT ?
The term green house effect was first coined
by J-Fourier in 1827 and was first investigated
quantitatively by Svante Arhenius
The greenhouse effect is when the
temperature rises because the suns heat and
light is trapped
It is produced by the presence of
carbondioxide, CFCs, methane, nitrous oxides
and water vapour in the lower atmosphere

WHAT ARE GREENHOUSE GASES?

Greenhouse gases are gases are in the earths
atmosphere that collect heat and light from
the sun
With too many greenhouse gasses in the air,
the earths atmosphere will trap too much
heat and the earth will get too hot. As a result
people, animals, and plants would die because
the heat would be too strong

CAUSES OF GLOBAL WARMING
Natural causes are causes that are created by
nature.

Release of methane gas from arctic tundra and
wetlands.

Methane is a greenhouse gas and a very dangerous
gas to our environment.

Earth goes through a cycle of climate change. This
climate change usually lasts about 40,000 years.

Pollution is one of the biggest manmade problems
leading to global warming
Burning fossil fuels
Green house gas CO2
Mining coal and oil
Population
More food, more methane, more burning of fossil
fuels
Manure
Transportation

EFFECT OF GLOBAL WARMING
Climate change:
floods in the areas where
the flood history is not
very common
droughts in places which
were having good rainfall
earlier
The atmosphere gets
suddenly very harsh in
the terms of cyclones and
thunderstorms
atmosphere is becoming
even more unpredictable
Hurricanes

On vegetation:

Tundra type of vegetation will turn to
temperate, cold deciduous and evergreen type
of forest
Woody plant population will tend to increase as
a result of increased precipitation
Soil moisture may decrease, water requirement
of the crop will increase & will affect the crop
yield.
Due to Green house effect, several plants cripple
down their size, fruits & leaves.

On Human Health:

It may lead to changes in
rainfall pattern & some areas
may become breeding
ground for mosquitoes &
some other insects which
are vector of disease like
malaria, dengue fever,
yellow fever, etc.
In low rainfall there will be
waterborne disease.
Heat waves are harmful to
health.

On Plants & Animals:

The dense Sunderbans in W.Bengal is one of the
richest forest in the world
Slowly disappearing & eventually die if the current
trend continues in global warming countries.
There are rapid rise in global temperature in next
100 years
Animals are beginning to shift their population
towards north or towards a higher altitude
Butterfly were getting less populated in the southern
areas which were warmer as compared to the
northern areas

Extinction of animal species
Dissolving of Polar Ice Caps
Increase in the water level of oceans and seas
as a result of melting of glaciers
increase in level of seas and oceans will engulf
land at the coastal areas and some low lying
countries may even become submerged
This will affect the length of the seasons
This will imbalance the ecosystem and will
effect greatly on the behavior of the birds and
the animals
Rise in sea levels
On Ocean Life:

It is estimated that there will be rise in sea
level by 20 to30 cm by 2030.
It also occur as a result of melting of glaciers
in non- polar regions during the 20th century.
Due to global warming the ice extent & snow
cover have decreased
coral reefs are expected to die off
Who can make a difference?

Government
&
us
STEPS TAKEN BY GOVERNMENT:
The government made a law called The Clean
Air Act so there is less air pollution
Making many companies change their
products
These products have a label on them telling
people what this product can do to the
environment and many people
Making car companies change some of the
things inside of the cars

STEPS WHICH WE CAN TAKE:
Replacing a regular incandescent light
bulb with a CFL
Do not leave appliances on standby
Cover your pots while cooking
Use the washing machine or dishwasher
only when they are full
Reuse your shopping bag
Plant a tree
Buy fresh foods instead of frozen
Start a carpool with your cowokers or
classmates
Keep your car tuned up
Protect forest worldwide
Fly less

Lets make our world a better
place!
The Time To ACT is now!
