If a liquid is placed in a vacuated container,then high energy molecules will leave the liquid.
These molecules, traveling at high speed (600- 700 m!h" will strie the surfaces of the container and
e#ert a measura$le pressure.
%t some point the amount of molecules leaving the liquid should e#actly equal the num$er
returning. This is called the vapour pressure. If the liquid is heated the num$er of molecules with
sufficient energy to $rea free is increased and hence a greater presure is e#erted.
it can $e seen that very little temperature rise is required to increase the pressure. %s vapour
and liquid are carried, the cargo must $e carried on the vapour pressure line
