Vrsmarty tr - J zsef ndor tr - St.
Stephens Basilica - Szabadsg tr - Kossuth
tr - Fvm tr - Vmhz krt - Vci utca -
Vrsmarty tr - Vigad tr & the Danube
Promenade

Time:
This tour takes about 4 hours. (Museums are
closed on Mondays)

Getting to Vrsmarty tr:
Take the Millennium Underground (M1) to
Vrsmarty tr. Alternately take Subways (M2)
or (M3) to Dek Ferenc tr, or streetcar 2 to
Vigad tr and take the short walk over to
Vrsmarty tr.
Leg 1
Vrsmarty tr to Jzsef ndor tr - Start your
walk at Vrsmarty tr {0}, named after the
renowned Hungarian poet, Mihly Vrsmarty,
whose statue can be seen in the middle of the
square {1}. This is where the Millennium
Underground begins and the famous Gerbeaud
Caf {A} is located. From the northeast corner of
Vrsmarty tr, walk over to J zsef ndor tr {2},
named after Archduke J oseph, son of the
Habsburg Emperor Leopold and governor of
Hungary for fifty years (1796-1846).

Leg 2
Jzsef ndor tr to St. Stephen's Basilica -
From J zsef ndor tr continue your walk on
Ndor utca {3} until you reach Zrinyi utca {4}.
This lively pedestrian precinct is filled with cafs
and restaurants. Turn right on Zrinyi Street and
you will see the Basilica {5} on Szent Istvn tr.
The St. Stephen's Basilica is the largest church
in Budapest. Construction commenced in 1851
and the inauguration ceremony took place in
1906. For great panoramic views of the city take
the stairs or the elevator to the dome's
observation deck.

Leg 3
St. Stephen's Basilica to Szabadsg tr - Sas
utca {6}, on the northwest corner of Szent Istvn
tr, will take you to Szabadsg tr {7}. The first
building on the right hand side of Szabadsg tr
houses the Hungarian National Bank {8},
founded in 1924. Other beautiful and significant
buildings include the U.S. Embassy {9} and the
former Stock Exchange {10}.

Leg 4
Szabadsg tr to Kossuth tr - Take Vcsey
utca from Szabadsg tr to Kossuth tr. Along
the way, you will see the statue of Imre Nagy
{11}, a figure standing on a bridge, facing the
Parliament. Prime Minister during the 1956
Revolution, tried and executed in 1958, Imre
Nagy became a symbol of freedom for
Hungarians.
A (Very) Brief History

A city since the 13th century and a part of
Budapest since 1873, Pest has always been
the center of life. Slowly outgrowing the
neighboring Buda, by the 18th century Pest
became the center of trade boasting many
shops and markets and it has remained the
economic and cultural center of Budapest ever
since.

To give you an idea of the size of Pest in the
Middle Ages, it was the length of Vci utca
from Vrsmarty tr to Fvm tr, enclosed by
the city's main gates. Pest flourished at the
beginning of the 20th century, leaving behind
many beautiful buildings commissioned by
aristocrats, bankers, landowners, insurance
companies and noble families.

Leg 5
Kossuth tr to Vmhz krt - The Parliament
{12}, built between 1885 and 1902, is the dominant
building on Kossuth tr. A magnificent example of
Neo-Gothic architecture, this is the third largest
Parliament building in the world. Guided tours are
available when Congress is not in session. The other
two prominent buildings in Kossuth tr are the
Ministry of Agriculture {13} and the Museum of
Ethnography {14}. Take Streetcar No. 2 to Fvm
tr. From there, start walking on Vmhz krt to
visit the famous Central Market Hall {18}.

Leg 6
Vci utca to Vrsmarty tr - From the main
entrance of Central Market Hall walk across Vmhz
krt to Vci Street {19}, the most famous street of
the city. This pedestrian precinct is filled with shops
and cafs. Vci utca ends at Vrsmarty tr {0},
where this walking tour started. J ust before reaching
the square, on the corner of Vci utca and Trr
Istvn utca, the white line on the pavement marks
the site of the medieval city wall. This is where the
citys northern gate, the 'Vci Gate', once stood {20}.

Leg 7
Vrsmarty tr to the Promenade - From
Vrsmarty tr take Vigad utca to the Danube
Promenade. The Vigad Concert Hall {21}, built in
Romantic style and opened in 1865, will be to your
left. Take a stroll on the Promenade and enjoy the
views of Castle Hill, Gellrt Hill and the Chain Bridge.
Be sure to take a picture with the statue of the Little
Princess {22}, sitting on the railings by the
embankment; she is one of Budapest's newest
attractions.
