I. Objectives
At the end of the exercise, the students should be able to: a) conduct a 24 hour food recall; b) describe
and assess diet using the daily food guide and food pyramid.
II. Summary of Procedures
For Part A: Students chose a certain person to interview regarding their previous days intake. Students
introduced themselves to the client and remained courteous and respectful throughout the activity. Information was
collected and recorded using Form 1 24 Hour Food Recall. Illustrations of usual portion sizes were used to facilitate
estimate of the amount of foods eaten. Checklist was used to help in further probe on the type of foods consumed.
Questions were asked according to the sequence of activities beginning from the time they woke up until their lsat
activity before going to bed. Snacks, fruits, candies and gravies eaten in between meals were also included in the
recall. Interviewees were asked if their food intake was typical, how much salt was added to the food she eats, and if
she takes food supplements. Measures and sizes of foods consumed were converted into approximate weights in
grams or any appropriate unit of measurement.
For Part B. Using the results of the 24-hour food recall collected in Part A, diet was evaluated using the
Daily Food Guide and Food Pyramid. Using the Daily Food Guide, the number of servings per food group consumed
by the interviewee was written on the 4
th
column of the form. The appropriate column was checked if whether the
actual intake is excess, deficient or as recommended. Diet was evaluated. Conclusions made regarding the foods
consumed by the interviewee as well as recommendations given to improve the nutritional quality of the diet were
given. For the food pyramid, the pyramid specific to the age group of the interviewee was drawn. A pyramid
representing the actual intake of the interviewee was also illustrated.
