1First day of clinicals what to bring and expect

What to bring: your steth, a small notebook that fits in your pocket, at least 2 pens,
penlight, bandage scissors and don't forget your ID
Bring your stethescope, a notepad, a few black pens (for charting), one of a different color
(helps when you're writing things down), your drug guide, penlight, bandage scissors,
hemostats one of those tiny centimeters measuring tapes to measure wounds,
remember not to do *anything* that is outside your scope of practice as a nursing student-
which means, if you have not been shown how to do it-checked off in lab-or whatever

Vital signs
HEAD to Toe Assessments
Bed bath
brush their teeth
change their gown and linens
Make a bed
Transfer
Gait belt
ROM
INSULINS shots how to give angle and where
INSULIN Meds
Look up pt look up pt history, diagnosis, labs
Look up pt disease process s/s and care
info and medical diagnosis
Look at pt meds side effects, body system meds affect
Look at pt labs
pt.'s I's and O's and chart
Re-directing client with dementia who continually focuses on one topic
I remember one day saying "I can't do this !!" when my total hip pt. had to have her IV dc'd
,foley dc'd, bandage changed, hemovac removed, and order out of bed.

Here is my baseline morning routine:
1st get my assignment.
2nd check my vital signs and patients' labs.
3rd Get report in the room and greet my patient
4th Either get or check my patients' morning vital signs.
5th Pull my first patients' medications (if everyone is ok, I usually just go with the earliest medication
scheduled).
6th while giving meds, I do a quick head to toe assessment and document it immediately.
7th See all patients, give their medications, assess & document
