Course Objectives: The goal of this course is to provide you with the skills necessary to be a confident and independent reader, and to help you improve your comprehension of written English. Furthermore, this course will focus upon the following goals:
- Using Reading Skills (To improve your ability to read and analyze new texts in English) - Mastering Vocabulary Words (There will be a focus on Vocabulary Skills which will be assessed from the homework and exams)
Course Guidelines: All students must use the required text as listed below (Using a textbook with answers already filled in, is not appropriate and will result in a loss of points) You are all adults, please act respectfully and courteously in class at all times Please place all handphones on silent and refrain from using them (Points will be taken away accordingly, as this will reflect upon your participation grade) Handphone use for dictionaries is allowed and encouraged Kakao Talk is NOT a dictionary, neither is Facebook, nor Angry Birds. Be on time, be prepared, and be happy This course will be more rewarding and valuable to you, if you approach it with the proper attitude and diligence

NOTE: This is a skills-based course that requires participation and effort during every class session and regular practice outside of class. Students will not improve their English skills without a personal commitment to serious effort
Assignments: Each student must complete homework assignments from Moodle. Homework is not a completion grade; on the contrary, the score you receive for your weekly assignments counts toward your overall grade.
Policies: To complete a course, students must attend at least 75% of classes. That is, if students miss a course more than four times, they will fail the course.
- Excused Absences: a) Death of immediate family members b) Physical exam for joining the army **Students must submit conformation documents to the ESL office within a week from the date of absence c) Hospital visits are no longer excused d) Reasons for absence other than above are unexcused
- Tardiness: a) Late for more than the first half of the class hour = 1 unexcused absence b) 3 times late = 1 unexcused absence
- Missed Exam: **The course has 2 exams (Midterm Exam and Final Exam) a) Missing any exams results in an automatic F for the class b) Makeup exams are allowed but will be docked points
- Grading: Homework = 30% Participation = 10% From Reading Class 10% From Listening & Speaking Class Midterm Exam = 20% Final Exam = 20% Speaking Exams = 10% NOTE: The course may be graded on a curve.
