Read the 4th

It's usually best
to include an

We used
Education/EmploymentHistory
as a heading so
that we could
combine J on's

his employment.
This shows
employers what
J on was doing
from1995 to

eliminates their
concern about
J on being
unemployed
during this time.
How many

Creating a targeted
resume, one with headings
and descriptions, that
specifically match ads and
job postings can boost
your response rate from
employers.
J on found an ad for a
NetworkDesktopSupportposition to
support multiple agencies.
Since he had helped to
setup and support 100
computers in 3 locations
on his college campus we
labeled that experience
Multi-SiteNetworkAdministration.
The ad also asked for
ability to train staff in MS
applications including
Word, Excel and
Powerpoint. We labeled
this experience
UserTraininginMSApplications.
It also asked for ability to
develop databasesystems
using Access, FoxPro and
Paradox. We labeled this
experience
DatabaseDesign/ Access- FoxPro- Paradox.
Knowing the requirements
for this position, take a
quick look at the headings
in this resume. Then turn
to page 9, which resume
do you think is the best
match for this position? If
you had to pick only one,
which would you choose?

thead for an Operations

Now read theheadings in
this resume. Then read
theheadings in J on's
resume on page 9.
Which set of headings best
match the ad on page 48 -
thosein this resume or the
resume on page 9?
Again, theseare small
changes but will very
quickly grab the
employer's attention
because this resume uses
thesetargeted headings:
QualificationsasanOperationsTechnician
Network/ WorkstationMaintenance
PCWorkstationSupport/ UserTraining
ProblemResolution/ OperationsSupport
You probably won't have
time to create a targeted
resume for every position
you'd like to apply for. So
create targeted resumes
for positions that you
would most like to have,
provide thebest salary
and growth opportunities.
The extra 5 or 10 minutes
you spend can
dramatically increase the
number of interviews you
generate as well as
increasing the salary
offers you receive.
Create targeted resumes
and land a great job!

Use key words
from ads to
create headings
for your cover
letter.
Howmany headings
in this letter match
the skills in the ad?
If you don't have a
"particular"skill ask
yourself if you have
a similar skill. Then
label that skill to
sound like what the
employer needs.
For example, an ad
asksfor Paradox
front-end database
programming.
You don't have
Paradox but do
have Access
experience. Use a
heading like
FrontEndDatabaseProgramming.
Thiswill catch the
employer'seye
better than seeing
Accessat first glance.
The 3rd paragraph
mentionsa list of
all of J on's
computer skills.
Create a list like
the one on page 18
and send it with
your cover letter.

Why You Need A
"Scannable"Resume
Manyemployersreceive hundreds to
thousandsofresumes. Tocutcostsin
screening andsortingresumes many
employers scan them. A scanner
looks like a copy machine and has
softwarethat can"read"yourresume
text and store it in a database
program. Every resume that is
scanned can then be sorted by
experience, skillsoreducation.
J on's Resume
Didn't Scan Well
Compare this scanned copy of Jon's
resume to his nicely formatted
resumeonpage9. Asyoucansee,
scanning eliminated the formatting
commands such as bolding and
underlining that Jon had used to
make his resume look attractive.
When formatting commands are
takenoff duringscanning, errorsand
designproblemsusuallyoccur.
J on's Corrected Resume
To correct Jon's resume and create
the resume onthe facing page, for
scanning, wefollowedtheguidelines
listedonpage54.
Scannable ResumesCan
Grab Attention
EventhoughJon'snewresumeonthe

easier to look at than Jon's before

EmployersUse Key Words
To Sort Scanned Resumes
The first section of this resume
includes a block of key words, or
areas of experience, an employer
might sort scanned resumes by.
Some scanning programs can only
retain25to35keywords. Therefore,
it's important to list 25 to 35 key
words at thetopof your resume to
ensuretheyarepickedupinsteadof
lessimportantwords. Noticethatthe
key words are nouns not verbs.
Analyze ads and job postings to
