What is Civil Engineering?
Civil Engineering is the engineering of civil
structures, from a small two lane road to a
eight lane super highway, from a small foot
bridge across the creek
to a steel giant spanning canyons and
tunneling under
mountains, even houses
to skyscrapers.
Training
A bachelors degree is the minimal requirement
for being certified as a civil engineer. This can
easily take four years, however most opt into a
masters program for addition years.
Future Job Growth
Bereau of Labour Statistics estimate a 20% job
growth by 2020.
Average salary is roughly $80,000
Notable Companies: THP Limited
Cincinnati born Engineering firm from 1973,
projects include the Ascent in Kentucky, several
UC labs, The Great American Ball Park, and
restoration of Music Hall.
Notable Companies: URS
Enineering Firm founded in San Francisco in
1951. Most notable project in Cincinnati is the
Daniel Beard Bridge.
Louis Tallarico
Structural Engineer and Ci-Founder of THP
Limited, received the Herman Schneider
Distinguished Engineer Award, the Cincinnati
ASCA Presidential Lifetime Achievement Award,
and awards from the CRSI, the AISC, and the
AIADE. He passed away in 2004.
Washington Roebling
Chief Engineer of the contrsuction of the
Brooklyn Bridge in New York from 1869-1883.
He died at the age of 84 in 1921.
