Assistant Professor of Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies Gender, Migration and

Human Trafficking
The University of Kansas Department of Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies (WGSS) is seeking
exceptional candidates to apply for a tenure-track faculty position at the Assistant Professor level in
Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies. We are interested in candidates whose work focuses on
gender, migration, or human trafficking with an African emphasis. This position is part of an
emerging cluster of interdisciplinary positions on the topic of migration, immigration, diaspora and
human trafficking and may include participation in interdisciplinary initiatives or in research
projects with scholars in other disciplines. The position is expected to begin as early as August 18,
2015. In addition to this collaborative work, the faculty member will be expected to research, write,
and publish in the candidates substantive field; develop and teach courses in migration and human
trafficking and African studies; serve on graduate student committees, direct theses and
dissertations and perform advising responsibilities; and serve on departmental, College, and
University committees. Faculty will be affiliated with the Kansas African Studies Center and are
expected to participate in KASC activities.

AAU. It is located in Lawrence, a thriving and progressive community a short drive from Kansas
City. The Department of Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies has a 40+ year history, an
interdisciplinary faculty (8 core faculty members and a large courtesy and affiliated faculty), and
graduate and undergraduate programs (a new Ph.D. program, a graduate certificate program, an
undergraduate major in Womens Studies, and Human Sexuality, and undergraduate minors in
Womens Studies and in Human Sexuality). The Kansas African Studies Center coordinates the
African Studies program and works with over 90 affiliated faculty members and 35 core Africanist
faculty.

Qualifications:
1. A Ph.D. or ABD in the humanities or a social science discipline, with a substantive focus on
gender, from an accredited school is expected by the start date of the appointment (08-18-
2015).
2. Demonstrated ability to work in interdisciplinary and collaborative environments.
3. A proven record or demonstration for high potential in research, publications, and grants.
4. Demonstrated ability to teach effectively at undergraduate and graduate levels, as evidenced
by application materials.
5. Demonstrated ability to teach gender studies and Africa-related courses, as evidenced by
application materials, educational background, and teaching philosophy statement.
6. Demonstrated research qualification in gender, migration, immigration, and/or human
trafficking in Africa as evidenced by course work, grant activity, and/or scholarly
publications.
