1st book report. Do androids dream of electric sheeps?
The book describes the events of a post apocalyptic world after a war called World War Terminus where mankind in order to survive has to move away from earth to space colonies like Mars. Not everyone can emigrate and they have to remain in earth. Survivors live in a hostile world covered with lethal dust and the inhabitants of the earth utilize a mood box to become less conscious of the reality to become productive. The dust affects animals and leads almost all of them to the brink of extinction. This is the reason of the creation of electric animals. People cognitively affected by the dust are called chikenheads. The story follows the life of Rick Deckard, a bounty hunter who chases illegal andys (androids) on earth due to their irregular status because their prime purpose is to serve people in outer space. They arent allowed to live on earth, if this happens, it means they killed their owners and escaped from their colonies. Deckard owns an electric sheep but he despises it, and aims to own a real animal. In order to reach his intention he commences to hunt a group of 6 andys distributed among his territory in San Francisco.
I enjoy dystopian novels and thats why I selected this reading. The autor depicts a dreadful scenario where people ought to run away from earth or stay there and find a way to survive. However both options are equally miserable. Up until chapter thirteen, Ive found three fundamental elements in the novel: organic animals, androids and some sort of religion (Buster Friendly or Mercenism). I believe that animals fill the void found in earth inhabitants due to the cruel reality. Andys are built to serve mankind in outer space but given what Ive read, somehow they have feelings and do not agree with the fate settled by their creators. Allegedly they kill their owners and emigrate to earth to live as humans. Wilbur Mercer and Buster Friendly fight against each other for humanitys mind control trying to entice as many followers by making them feel good with themselves.
