Argumentative essay

Television is dumbing down our culture

The term culture is used to refer to the act of developing the intellectual and moral
faculties, especially by education. In our days, television is believed to be the most-used
commodity, millions of people using it in their everyday life. ven though television is
considered a great thing to have, it has its own drawbac!s and can negatively affect today"s
society.
In the first place, scientists claim that people who spend a great amount of time watching
T# may have an under-developed brain, while the ones that engage themselves inb physical,
impersonal or cognitive activities have a well-developed brain. It seems to me that more and
more people, especially children, are being restricted from indulging in outdoor activities,
which are essential for a balanced physical and mental health.
$oreover, violence plays a ma%or role in today"s television shows and movies and it is a
!nown fact that more than fifty percent of television programs contain psychological harmful
violence. &or e'ample, e'perts have proven that children who watch plenty of television are
more aggressive. This phenomenon is more often encountered between young children
because they are not able to distinguish right from wrong at their age.
In addition to this, television programs should contain messages that stimulate the mind
and watching should be restful, entertaining and educational. (owever, most programs are
saturated with violence and unuseful information, in most cases causing personal insecurities
and misconceptions. &or instance, the so-called reality shows ma!e the most of violence
and inappropriate behaviour. )eople that watch such T# shows often wonder why their life
isn"t as glamorous as it appears to be in their favourite show and tend to be unhappy.
In conclusion, given the fact that television is available to almost everyone, it can be
capable of persuading one"s mind and behaviour, such harm including aggressive attitudes,
poor culture and deficiency in social s!ills. I strongly believe that people should be living
their own lives and not seeing other"s lives lived out on some screen.
