THE use of evidence to construct testable explanations and
predictions of natural phenomena, as well as, the knowledge generated through this process
A. Relies on evidence scientists use scientific inquiry to gather evidence and answer their questions
1. Subject Selection Dr. Buell conducted a study on college football linemen to help further the understanding of sports nutrition. Dr. Buell investigated the presence of a condition called metabolic syndrome. Her research showed that 34 out of the 70 college linemen studied were at risk for metabolic syndrome. Now we can prepare for metabolic syndrome and maybe even prevent it from happening.
2. Data Collection they measured the linemens height, mass, blood pressure, upper-body skin folds, and waist circumference. They also collected blood samples, family health histories, and information about exercise routines and nutrition habits.
B. Expands Knowledge The search for new knowledge is the driving force that moves science forward
C. Challenges Accepted Theories When disagreements occur, more research is done to find which ideas are supported by research
D. Question Results Observations or data that are not consistent with current scientific understanding are of interest to scientists. E. Tests Claims Scientists use standard experimental procedures in their research. They make claims and draw conclusions based on a large amount of data and observations obtained from unbiased investigations and carefully controlled experimentation.
