Abstract
This study examines the role of the Khoy (slaves) in Lan Xang Kingdom during
the fifteenth and the seventeenth centuries. It had changed from the period of kingdom
formation (before the fifteenth century) due to socio-political changes, especially as the
effects of the economic growth in Southeast Asia. This increased the Khoy's participation
in trade. They became an important source of labor, and the demand for them rose.
Meanwhile, Chao Khoy, the ruling class, attempted to accumulate labor and power by
participating in the trade system. Informal patron-client relations became widespread.
Wealth was no longer concentrated in the hand of the elite. Participation in trade allowed a
number of Phrai (commoners in the corvee system) to move up and own the Khoy, which
in turn led to the increased number and the transformed role of the Khoy.
