Week 6: Project Two: Art + Public Space Continued

Week 6 Exercise 4: The Maquette: Placement

The Gates Discovery Determining The Correct Scales Idea 1
Having determined that
the Dimmeys crossing
was the best possible
location for Idea one, I
then needed to turn my
attention to the size of
the scale. As stated
earlier I tested this with
three sizes, small,
medium and large.
Looking at the three
here and comparing
them I find that the
small scale seems to
lose its meaning of
gates as they just appear
out of place.
The large scale looks to large almost jail like when I look at the women in
the background in comparison to size of the gates. So this would change
the intended purpose of the gates and attach a negative notion to them.
The medium size on
the other hand feels
just right. Large
enough to give the
impression of gates
but small enough not
to be jail like but
more welcoming to
the pedestrian. So
this makes it clear
that the best scale to
use would be the
medium size. The
following slide is a
close up of the
medium scale and is
strictly for the
purpose of viewing.

Week 6 Exercise 4: The Maquette: Placement
The Gates Discovery Design Idea 2
As with Idea one, I discovered the process of inserting the maquette into the intended location a most helpful process in determining
how the maquette would fit in with its surroundings. Unlike Idea one I discovered that Idea two fitted right in to its surroundings and
its intended location. I liked the way it just felt right to me. Like it had been there forever. It felt peaceful and pleasing on the eye. The
colours seemed to blend nicely with its surroundings. I think the neon's placed of to the side, will interact nicely with The Gateway. I
think being just the heads made their image more appealing as instead of being swallowed up by the immediate environment, they
were able to hold their own.

Week 6 Exercise 4: The Maquette: Placement
The Gates Discovery Alternate Locations Idea 2
Despite the fact that I really liked how Idea two looked in its intended location, it was still important to see how it would
interact with the other suitable locations. Not surprisingly I also liked the way they interacted with the two locations.
Interestingly though I found as with Idea one that I still preferred the gates more at the crossing near Dimmeys. So Im finding
myself asking what it is about the Dimmeys location as appose to the Chisholm.edu.au crossing that appears to be more
suitable. I think this is partly because of the camouflaging thats happening with these images. But also I noted that the
Chisholm.edu.au crossing has a street coming of the opposite side, where the Dimmeys location doesnt and maybe this
provides a more enclosed space. So again I feel the deign is more suited for the Dimmeys location.

Week 6 Exercise 4: The Maquette: Placement
The Gates Discovery Determining The Correct Scales Idea 2
Again I found the smaller scale
somewhat disturbing. They
appeared more like a decoration
rather than a set of gates.
The large scale is nice but gives a closed in feeling.
Almost suffocating. So again it gives of negative
feelings so would be most undesirable.
The medium scale feels right.
Once more inviting and looks as
though it belongs there. I think
also the visual appearance you
experience when you look
through the middle of the gates
gives a balanced appearance in
the immediate surrounds. This I
feel is vital to the happiness
one would feel when being
greeted by the gates. Therefore
this would be my chose scale
for the maquette.

Week 6 Exercise 4: The Maquette: Placement
The Gates Discovery Design Idea 3
When I inserted Idea three into its intended location as with Idea 2 I really liked what I was seeing. I felt that the contemporary
look really stood out and gave Dandenong a nice new look. This would be a good thing as once the development of Dandenong
is complete it would in fact tone back and become as one with its new surroundings. I feel visually they are very inviting from
both ends of Lonsdale Street. This would be important as they would need to visual fit in at both ends if they were to be
installed.
Week 6: Project Two: Art + Public Space Continued
Week 6 Exercise 4: The Maquette: Placement
The Gates Discovery Alternate Locations Idea 3
For me Idea three really highlights the importance for testing the location by inserting the maquette into the intended location
through the use of Corel Paint Shop Pro Photo x2. I say this because I love this design and feel it meets the needs of Dandenong,
but I really dont like the maquette in either of these locations. For me they clash and seem over powering compared to their
immediate surroundings, deeming them both unfit for this location. However I will still put them through a scale test in case it is
the scale I am finding off putting.
Week 6: Project Two: Art + Public Space Continued
Week 6 Exercise 4: The Maquette: Placement
The Gates Discovery Determining The Correct Scales Idea 3
With such uncertainty to Idea three in both of these locations I have tried to keep an open mind when assessing the different
scales for both locations. In terms of scale I would still say the middle scale works best for the Dimmeys Crossing location, but with
the Chisholm.edu.au crossing I think Id have to choose the small scale. I think it was important to revisit these locations with the
different scales as it could have been the scale of the maquettes that was putting me off. However scale aside I still dont like either
of these maquettes when placed in these locations.

Week 6 Exercise 4: The Maquette: Placement
The Gates Discovery Summing up Idea 3
In summing up I have found the process of visiting my local artworks and then researching their history a pivotal part of the creating
process. Having an understanding of these works and their history made it easy when consider a work of art for my local area. This also
helped when it come to establishing my preferred site. Realising I was free to do either three different works or three different versions of
a work, I felt I would gain a greater understanding of this process through doing three versions of the same work as I would be able to
make comparisons. This played an acute role in the unfolding of my personal understanding of this entire process. Sketching the ideas and
scaling them was helpful in that I could see visually my ideas unfolding in front of me and determine any problems that might arise. One of
the greatest things I learn during this step was how complexed it really was to create a work of art that would be able to interact with the
community, at the same time as making sense to the existing history of the local area and previous public arts. The actual creating of the
maquettes brought to the four front all the issues that could arise when actually making this piece of art for real. Some might see this as a
waist of time, but to me it is time best spent. By taking the time to make each of the maquette I was able to iron out the little things that
stood in the way of this work being truly great such as managing to get the back of the design the same as the front. These might seem like
trivial points but in fact they are vital to the reading of the work once its been realized. The other beauty of these maquettes was that I
was able to go out into my local community and take photographs of the intended locations and then insert these maquette into the
image to see if the image is what I imagined the work to be. Taking this a step further its also a pivotal step in being able to pitch my work
to an intended council or gallery. Through this process I also realised the importance of having a great understanding of photography as
the difference between a good or bad image could possible coast me a opportunity or commission further down the track. Another great
thing about this process was being able to consider my own work ethics and how they may or may not impact on the work I am doing. I
learned it was natural and ok to become frustrated or even disappointed when working through ideas, however I also learned how great it
felt to work through these frustrations and disappointments to find a resolution. In fact I got to a point where I began to enjoy these
frustrations as I new this would led to greater learnings and more in-depth meanings behind my work. I learned that for good creations to
be created a slow and steady speed was require so that ideas had time to be realised and that the work had the opportunity to develop
with little errors made.

Looking back I believe I should have scaled the work up a little more for the purpose of construction, as I feel the size hindered the creating
process to some degree, making it hard to accurately align the two sides of the gates. But on a whole I am very happy with the outcome of
the work as well as the outcome of my learnings, as I feel I have really taken on board all that presented itself to me during the process
and worked through each never banding the ideas or considering them to hard. But rather embracing them and seeing them through to
the end.
