BUSINESS WRITING MECHANICS
Business Writing Mechanics (BWM) is an online, non-credit
course designed to develop your skills in effective business
writing in English. You will work with fellow business
writers in a helpful and interactive environment supported
by a professionally trained writing facilitator. This course
will help you develop the basic writing skills you need to
succeed in business and provides excellent preparation for
writing intensive courses, such as Business Communication
(BUS 360W).
Become a better writer.
This course will be completely online. You will rst write
an online pre-test designed to identify areas in your writing
where you most need to focus. After this assessment, you
will be tasked with progressively more challenging writing
tasks relevant to the problems found in the pre-test in order
to help you build the skills you need to improve your writing.
The approach is friendly. You will be working with fellow
business writers in an interactive and constructive
environment with a professionally trained writing facilitator.
Peer review is a strong feature of this course. Also included
will be access to informative demonstration video clips (10 to
15 minutes each) that model writing problems and solutions.
Each session will be run by your facilitator and your
discussion group, and will be small enough for signicant
one-on-one instruction and interaction. These sessions are
highly focused on helping you to develop your skills in the
use of Business English mechanics so that you can become
more condent in writing, editing, and revising your work.
The course will run for 10 weeks and will require
approximately 6 hours of work per week. BWM is a non-
credit course and may be repeated, if needed. This course is
administered though the SFU Centre for Online and Distance
Education (CODE) and the SFU Beedie School of Business.
If you are currently taking courses in Business (or plan to) and
are concerned about your communications skills, this course
is highly recommended.
