The preferential option for the poor:

Christians are called to look at the world from the perspective of the marginalized and to work
in solidarity for justice Christians are called to look at the world from the perspective of the

It is considered one of the ways in which universality is incarnated as it is an essential part of the
universality of Christian faith aiming for transformation of the world to a higher humanity.
e are all challenged to show preferential option for the poor primarily to do the following:

#. $efend the defenseless
%. &ssess lifestyles' policies' and social institutions in terms of impact for the poor
&ll Christians are called upon to strengthen the whole community (y assisting the most
vulnera(le. In fact' the compassion for the poor was rooted from )esus* acts: feeding the hungry'
curing the sick' raising the dead' eating with social outcasts' and challenging a(usive authority.
+ot only the followers of Christ (ut also the Church' (y virtue of its evangelical duty' is called
upon to show compassion to the poor while still upholding the common good,stand (eside the
poor' discern justice of their re-uests' and help satisfy them. In relation to justice' how a society
treats the poor indicates the justice of a society. .pon the last judgment' /od will also judge us
according to how we treat his transforming power' the poor' particularly in responding to the
hungry' thirsty' prisoners' and strangers. To conclude' the preferential option for the poor is not
optional. It is mandatory upon the followers of Christ as each Christian must act to lift up the
poor and disadvantaged.
