Man Rescued From Harbor Rocks
Rock rescues are a relatively rare occurrence in Redondo Beach, according to Fire Department Division Chief Rob
Rappaport.
A man jumped from the sea wall in the Redondo Beach Marina and injured himself on the rocks below Sunday
afternoon, requiring firefighters to rescue him.
The incident occurred at about 2 p.m., as the reception in honor of Body Glove co-founder Bob Meistrell , who died in
June, wrapped up nearby at Seaside Lagoon.
According to Redondo Beach Fire Department Division Chief Rob Rappaport, the man jumped onto the rocks
possibly to go fishingand injured his right knee to the point where he could not put any weight on it.
Firefighters climbed onto the rocks and tied the man to a stretcher, then used the ladder as a set of rails to hoist him
onto the sea wall. He was then transported to a local hospital for treatment.
"(A rock rescue) is not a common occurrence," Rappaport said. "I'd say we probably do less than 10 per year."
Sunday's rescue came less than a week after firefighters had participated in a training exercise for a rock rescue.
