Ethical Review (Field work)
If you are undertaking a project with animals you will need to include a review of any ethical considerations. Below find
some pointers regarding ethical considerations before you undertake your experimentation, depending on
circumstances you may need to edit my list of factors. You will need to put the points of this ethical review into your
method section.

Factor Consideration / Response
Will your experiment directly endanger
the subjects chance of survival?
Species may be stepped on and some may be killed or
moved out of place
Do you need to move them from their
habitat?
No
Will you be able to return them to their
original place?
-
Is it necessary to return to exact spot?
-
Will your experiment impact the survival
of non-target species?
Yes
Are any of the species you are working
with rare or endangered?
No
Covered by legislation?
No
Will the experiment reduce the
organisms opportunities to feed?
No
Will they be subject to higher levels of
desiccation than normal?
No
Will they be more likely to be preyed
upon following the experiment?
No
Will you need to retain any specimens
for identification purposes?
(if so will you need a separate review for
them?)
No
Will you need to hold them in a
container for any period of time?
No
If so can they be safely kept with other
individuals?
-
Appropriate conditions/water quality in
that container?
-
Does your experiment cause stress?

No, not if damage by quadrats and transect and stepping
is kept to a minimum
Does your experiment cause pain?

Potential but minimal.
What signs of pain do your organisms
exhibit?
None
