6. a) (i)Derive the EMF equation of a Synchronous Generator. (8)
(ii) Explain the Two Reaction Theory of Salient pole Synchronous machine. (8)

b) A 100KV, 3000V, 50Hz, three phase star connected alternator has an
effective armature resistance of 0.2n.The field current of 40A produces a short
circuit current of 200A and an open circuit emf of 1040V(line value).Calculate
the full load voltage regulation at 0.8 pf lagging and 0.8 pf leading. Draw
phasor diagram. (16)

7. a) (i) Discuss briefly why Synchronous motor is not self starting. Explain
the different methods for starting a synchronous motor. (8)
(ii) Explain the effect of changing excitation on armature current and power
factor. (8)
