Lab #_______

Title: The Gobstopper Lab

Objective: Hard candies are known for their bright colors, delicious tastes,
and having a ton of sugar. While having a handful of candy every once in a
while is definitely a good thing, we like conducting experiments with them!
We especially love Gobstoppers. They have layers of colors that, when they dissolve into water, do
something very peculiar... The purpose of this lab is to determine what happens to a gobstoppers when
dissolved in water.

Hypothesis (Prediction): If we dissolve 4 different gobstoppers in water, then _____________________

Materials: Gobstoppers (4 different colors), Petri Dish, Water, Graduated Cylinder

Procedure:
1. Obtain 4 different colors of Gobstoppers and a petri dish
2. Using a graduated cylinder measure out 30 ml of water and pour the water into the petri dish.
3. Carefully place the candies at the four points of the petri dish as shown in the diagram below. Once
the candies are positioned, DO NOT TOUCH the dish or the candies until the lab is over.
4. Color the positions of the candies in the data section.
5. Record all observations in the data chart and on the circles (in color) every 2 minutes.

Analysis Questions:

1. What was the purpose of this lab?

2. Was your hypothesis (prediction) right or wrong? How do you know?

3. List 3 things that you think we could have done to make this experiment more
accurate.

4. What is another question that you think we can further investigate after
completing this lab activity?
