Application The gateway COM581 is used as a gateway
and data concentrator in a substation automa-
tion system. Apart from protocol conversion,
the unit marshals data for transfer to higher
level control systems (power system control),
to other substations and to protection and
control equipment. COM581 is a component
of the ABB series of high and medium-volt-
age substation automation devices.
Because of its modular design, COM581 sup-
ports multiple communication interfaces and
protocols. Provision is made for exchanging
data with several network control centers via
different telecontrol channels according to
IEC 60870-5-101, RP571 or DNP 3.0 etc. In
addition to conventional telecontrol commu-
nication channels, modern powerful LANs
are supported, e.g. IEC 60870-5-104.
The bay control units and protection devices
communicate via an interbay bus utilizing
either LON or IEC 61850 communication
protocol. The integration of third-party pro-
tection equipment is done via the interna-
tional standards IEC 60870-5-103 or IEC
61850.
Apart from protocol conversion, COM581
also performs system functions at station
level such as the concentration of individual
alarms to a sum alarm.
The modularity of the device is based on the
type and number of communication protocols
and the physical interfaces, the number of
power supply boards (redundancy) and the
number of processor boards.
Design The gateway COM581 is an integral part of
the ABB substation automation system. Its
hardware and software are based on the
numerical busbar protection REB500.
Figure 1 shows the integration of COM581 in
an ABB automation system. One COM581 is
used for the link to the substation automation
system. The other COM581 is used to inter-
face to third-party protection schemes. ABB
protection devices are connected directly to
the interbay bus via the LON interface.
Figure 2 shows a redundant COM581 in an
ABB substation automation system. Here the
the bay units are integrated with the IEC
61850 protocol. The redundant COM581
units are operated in the hot-hot configura-
tion. This means that the data from the pro-
cess are equally treated by both COM581 and
sent to the NCCs via both COM581.

Protocols IEC 60870-5-101 is a serial protocol for
connection to the Network Control Center
(NCC). The protocol is a companion stan-
dard of the IEC 60870-5 series of commu-
nication standards. It is available as slave
protocol in the COM581 and may be oper-
ated in either the balanced or unbalanced
link mode. The balanced mode can be used
for serial connections with up to 64 kbps.
IEC 60870-5-104 (point-to-point) is the
networked version of the companion stan-
dard IEC 60870-5-101. IEC 60870-5-104
uses the TCP/IP (Transmission Control
Protocol / Internet Protocol) transport
layer. The COM581 is able to implement
the server functionality of IEC 60870-5-
104 as point-to-point link.

IEC 60870-5-103 is a monitoring interface
for the connection of protection equip-
ment. The interface supports three main
categories of data exchange: public signal,
disturbance data and generic services. The
COM581 is able to handle the entire range
of data exchange and in addition also sup-
ports privately agreed upon address
ranges. In the case of the disturbance data
and generic service, the COM581 acts as
transparent gateway and it is up to the con-
nected client on the station or network
control level to implement the services.
RP570/RP571 is an ABB serial protocol
used for connection to NCC or Micro-
SCADA equipment. The protocol is based
on the IEC 60870-5 link layer definition.
The COM581 implements the slave part of
the RP570/RP571.
DNP 3.0 is a serial protocol for connection
to NCC. The protocol is based on the
IEC 60870-5 link layer definitions. This
protocol, which is an open, intelligent,
robust and efficient SCADA protocol and
whose owner is the DNP 3.0 user group,
has gained worldwide acceptance.
COM581 implements the slave and master
part of the DNP 3.0 for the serial link.
COM581 supports the level 2 fully and
also some features of level 3.
LON is a protocol defined by Echelon
Corporation. ABB uses the LON protocol
as connection between bay units and sta-
tion level equipment (interbay bus or sta-
tion bus). For the secure transport, in order
to accommodate the requirements of Sub-
station Automation in general, ABB has
defined its own transport, session and
application layers. ABB LON devices and
the LON-SPA-gateway (LSG) are sup-
ported. In addition the Eberle tap changers
will be supported.
IEC 61850 - communication within the
substation. The goal of IEC 61850 is
interoperability, i.e. the ability of IEDs
from one or several manufacturers to
exchange information and use the informa-
tion for their own functions. The approach
of IEC 61850 is to decompose all func-
tions into smallest objects (Logical Node,
LN), which communicate with each other.
These LNs are objects, which contain all
data to be exchanged according to stan-
dardized services. This SA domain-spe-
cific application model (data, services) is
mapped to a mainstream communication
stack comprising MMS, TCP/IP and
Ethernet. Data are exchanged via client-
server relations. COM581 supports the
client and server functionality.

up to 4 LON CPUs per COM581
LSG 30 LSG devices per CPU (LON application)
SPA 8 SPA devices per LSG
Eberle tap changers 8 devices per CPU (LON application)
General COM581 limitations:
The max. number of CPUs is 9 for one COM581.
The min. number of CPUs is 1.
The IEC 60870-5-101 CPU allows the handling of 2 IEC 60870-5-101 applications (serial
lines) on one CPU (1 x synchronous and 1 x asynchronous or 2 x asynchronous).
For SRP the two connections from the COM581 CPU to the Ethernet switches must be either
both electrical or both optical. Mixed mode is not supported.

General
features
Starting with release 6.20 it is possible to run
two protocols on the same CPU. In general it
is possible to select one time each protocol.
The following table shows the possible com-
binations for 2 protocols on the same CPU
card for the release 6.30:
Single = only single protocol on the CPU possible
yes = 2 protocols on the same CPU possible
no = combination not possible

features
Redundant COM581 configuration
The following section shows the different
variants for a redundant COM581 configura-
tion:
Variant 1:
COM581 in hot-hot configuration
In this configuration the NCC is polling both
communication lines at the same time and
both COM581 are working in a hot-hot con-
figuration. All data will be sent twice to the
NCC and the NCC has to handle the dupli-
cated events. The NCC can supervise both
communication lines.
Fig. 3 Hot-hot configuration
Variant 2:
COM581 in hot-standby configuration
In this configuration the NCC is polling only
one communication line and the other com-
munication line is not polled. One COM581
is working in a hot- and the other is working
in standby configuration. On the standby
COM581 it's allowed to send test link to
supervise the communication line.
The NCC can force a switch over from hot to
standby by polling the standby communica-
tion line. Test link on the standby line is
allowed to check the availability. The standby
COM581 can delete the event queues to
avoid too many duplicated events, this time
for deleting the event queues is configurable
in the CAP581. During switchover from hot
to standby a small number of double events
are allowed.

Variant 3:
COM581 in hot-standby configuration (with
additional link between both COM581)
With an additional connection between two
COM581 it is possible to run a hot-standby
configuration. In the standby mode the serial
interfaces will be switched off.
An error in one COM581 (e.g. CPU or power
supply failure) will force a switch over from
the hot to the standby COM581.
The COM581 will guarantee that events are
not lost during a switch over, but a small
number of double event are allowed.

IEC 61850
features
The COM581 supports the IEC61850 clients
as well as the IEC61850 server feature. The
IEC61850 client is required to fulfil the gate-
way feature within as system. The server will
be used for the COM581 Proxy. The
COM581 Proxy will be used for the integra-
tion of protection devices via the IEC60870-
5-103 protocol and distributes the data on
IEC61850.
SRP - Serial
Redundancy
Protocol
Serial Redundancy Protocol is intended for
connecting COM581 via two interfaces to a
ring of RSTP (Rapid Spanning Tree Protocol)
Ethernet switches.
Only one of the interfaces is forwarding and
the other is in a silence mode. There is a
switch over time of around 10 seconds.
SRP is useful to increase the availability on
the station level devices by connecting the
COM581 to two different Ethernet switches.

In a distributed system architecture with
MicroSCADA Pro and COM581 it is neces-
sary to communicate between station HMI
(MicroSCADA) and gateway (COM581) to
deal with the Command Authority. Either the
Command Authority is on station level
(MicroSCADA Pro) or on NCC level.

Functions The main tasks performed by the gateway
COM581 are protocol conversion and data
marshalling. Protocol conversion comprises a
series of sub-tasks that are described briefly
below.
Dynamic (external and internal) protocol
handling
A communication protocol consists of a
sequence of actions and reactions structured
according to the ISO/OSI 7 data exchange
layer model. Dynamic protocol handling con-
cerns both external communication, for
example with the network control center, and
internal communication between the various
protocol functions in COM581. The units
external response is determined by the proto-
col being applied at the time. Examples of
dynamic protocol handling are the scanning
procedures of master/slave protocols.
Format conversion
The different communications protocols gen-
erally have different data formats that have to
be transferred in both directions. In order to
achieve the highest degree of modularity,
COM581 first converts the data to a neutral
internal format (based on the international
standard IEC 60870-5-101) and then to the
format of the specific target protocol. Since
communication on the internal bus is also
based on IEC 60870-5-101, the amount of
conversion effort required is a minimum in
cases where this standard, which is univer-
sally applied by many manufacturers, is used
for telecontrol communication as well.
Address conversion
Not only are the data formats of the various
protocols different, their address mapping is
also different and has to be converted as well.
Communication gateway
Substation Automation Products
COM581
Page 8 1MRB520206-Ben
Functions (contd) The addresses are thus similarly converted
initially to a neutral address map before being
converted to the address map of the target
protocol.
Marshalling and copying data
An important aspect of multiple protocol
applications with COM581 (e.g. communica-
tion with several network control centers) is
the proper marshalling of the data to be trans-
ferred according to the appropriate target pro-
tocols. This operation is based on the datas
address in COM581. Multiple protocol appli-
cations also involve duplicating or copying
data.
Fig. 8 Software configuration of the COM581
Local operation of the gateway COM581
The simplest alternative of operating the unit
is the local control panel on the front with a
4-line LCD with cursor control.
The second alternative is to connect a PC to
the optical interface also located on the local
control panel on the front of the unit.
The menu-guided operator program on the
PC provides facility for:
setting parameters
loading application software
The operator program CAP581 running on
the PC connected to the gateway COM581
has been written so that little reference has to
be made to operating instructions. This has
been achieved by:
an user-friendly menu-guided selection of
functions using windows techniques
the ability to create application software
off-line and download it to the communi-
cations unit afterwards
The software architecture of COM581 can be
seen from Fig. 8. The configuration data are
stored in the data base system (DBS). The
diagnostic subsystem (DIA) ensures that the
applications are started up and shut down
properly and also supervises the operation of
COM581. The clock time of the LON/IEC
61850 station bus is used as time base.

CAP581
configuration tool
for COM581
The configuration tool CAP581 is required
for configuring a gateway COM581.
For each COM581, a database is generated
running CAP581 which is then downloaded
to the respective COM581. With the help of
the DIS581 (Diagnostic and System Informa-
tion Tool) the data base created on the PC can
be loaded via a serial, optical interface (LMI)
on the particular protocol converter
COM581.
Fig. 9 Principle of the engineering and configuration tool CAP581
CAP581 is used for configuring the data
communication interface (e.g. LON, IEC 101,
RP571 etc.). The CAP581 configuration tool
is utilized for setting the protocol parameters,
data conversion, tables and marshalling
tables. The data can be entered into data
masks or imported from a signal list. Signal
import via Excel list is supported.
Parameter settings are documented in lists.
The configuration operations are highly auto-
mated. Existing configuration data for bay
units can therefore be used as a basis for con-
figuring new schemes. The internal COM581
addresses are also assigned fully automati-
cally. The engineering and configuration of a
COM581 scheme is also made more efficient
by the assignment of default settings.
Diagnostic The Diagnostic and System Information Tool
(DIS581) provides a serial interface to the
COM581. This enables the user to up- and
download configuration data. Furthermore
protocol information could be uploaded from
the COM581 device. The tool provides the
user with a testing environment as it supports
the forcing and monitoring of signals to the
NCC and station devices.

Power supply board 500PSM03
The power supply board is a DC/DC con-
verter with an output of 100 W.
It can operate from all input voltages in a
range from 36 V DC to 312 V DC without
any switching.
The tolerances of the rated output voltages of
+5 V DC and 12 V DC are continuously mon-
itored. Uninterrupted power in case of input
power loss is maintained during a minimal
time of 70 ms (at 100 W output power and
U
i
=36 V). During the first 50 ms no VME
bus signals are generated. After 50 ms the
ACFAIL* signal is generated and all output
voltages remain within specified limits for at
least 20 ms.
Provision is made for a second redundant
power supply board on the right of the rack.
The redundant power supplies are both active
simultaneously i.e. no switchover time is nec-
essary. Power distribution in the redundant
mode is better than 35% / 65%.
Processor board 500CIM06
The application programs run on the proces-
sor units (processor boards), see Fig 14. The
same CPU board 500CIM06 is used for all
protocols, and it is equipped with a powerful
power PC processor. For LON communica-
tion an ancillary board 500LBI02 is inserted.
Star coupler board 500SCM02
A star coupler board 500SCM02 converts the
electrical signals to be transferred via the bus
into optical signals. The board has five opti-
cal transmitter/receiver pairs which are con-
nected to the protection devices via optical
fiber cables.
