For small diamet er pipes (less

than 4" inner diamet er), simply


position a wad of Dissolvo
paper several inches down int o
each sect ion t o be joined.
For larger pipes (4" inner diameter
and larger), cut the paper into a
circle wit h a diameter several
inches larger t han the pipe ID
for a 6" I D pipe, cut an
8" diameter paper circle.
Trace or impress t he pipe inner
diameter on the paper and f old
on t his line t o f orm a 90
degree lip. Insert the dam int o
the pipe with t he lip t owards
the weld prep.
Peel tape f rom backing and
tape dam in place.
Punch a small hole in t he dam
to f acilit at e t he evacuation of
air when purging.
For pipes larger than 28"
diameter, simply splice two or
more sheets of Dissolvo paper
t ogether wit h Dissolvo t ape, and
proceed as in st eps B, C, and D.
Aft er t he dams are in place,
Argon or another purge gas
may be int roduced through t he
root gap with a needle valve
connected t o the gas line.
If one end of the pipe is accessible, the
purge gas may be introduced t hrough a hole
at t he lower end of one dam. A vent hole
should be made at the upper end of the
ot her dam t o allow air and gases t o escape.
: cover the open root joint on t he
outside of t he pipe wit h t ape t o prevent gas
leakage.
