Agenda: 1) Pop Quiz 2) Langston Hughes The Negro Artist and the Racial Mountain 3) 2 Cent Discussion 4) Creative Writing Homework: Read Hughes excerpt and answer questions Langston Hughes The Negro Artist and the Racial Mountain CONTEXT: Langston Hughes, during the Harlem Renaissance, wrote this essay urging black intellectuals and artists to break free of the artificial standards set for them by whites and encouraged them to embrace their own culture. Langston Hughes The Negro Artist and the Racial Mountain KEY POINTS: Langston exposes division in the African American culture during this time period; he highlights the geographical and religious divisions, but also the tension between those with lighter/darker skin color. His main point was encouraging African Americans to stray from the idea to be white and have confidence in their own uniqueness, originality, and individuality. Through this point he exposes this point by analyzing the conflict between being Black but wanting to be White.
