September 9, 2014 6:30PM - 7:30PM Parkview Library
Principal Meet & Greet The first 30 minutes of the evening was an opportunity to get to know Parkviews new Principal, Mr. Mylo Allen. There was an assortment of questions asked. Mr. Allen also shared about his Entry Plan which entails talking with a broad range of individuals about the school so that he can get a good idea of the climate of the school, what students are like at Parkview, how they transition into middle school, etc. Following the Q&A we had a reception with an opportunity to mingle with Mr. Allen and one another.
Official PTA Meeting began at 6:30 pm Welcome and Introductions o Introductions of Exec Board, Teachers and all individuals present at the meeting introduced themselves. Great representation from every grade, especially kindergarten! What is the PTA? o Support children and families in our school and district. o Hold several fundraisers throughout the year to raise funds for school programs, etc. o We seek to create a nurturing, creative environment within our school! it takes a village mentality. o For the 2014-2015 year we will communicate with the school community through the following ways FB page, weekly reminders in Panda Pockets, bi-monthly newsletter, PTA website, class reps, sandwich board. o Areas of focus for the 2014-2015 school year community, involvement, communication. The second group will be focusing on special education. o If this is something you are interested in, reach out to Mr. Allen. Meetings are held about once a month. Parkview is allotted two slots on each of these two committees. Sarah Naylor will continue on PAC, so there is one spot remaining for this committee. Mr. Hayden offered a thank you for this.
Old Business A. Directory be sure to fill out green sheet, as the directory is starting to be compiled. Good resource for getting in touch with families, etc. Deadline 15 th of September. B. Shed Will be placed at end next to playground shed. Will hold PTA stuff that used to be in the hallway closets that were removed. C. Mural The beautiful mural students created back in the 2012-2013 school year with Ben Mann will be moved inside across from the office. This will all it to be protected from graffiti and the elements. After evaluating a few places to move the mural to, this was the best spot and will fit nicely. D. Haggen/Target Card Reminder Remember to link your Haggen card to our school! They give a percentage to our school for purchases made at Haggen when you use your Haggen card. On that note, if you sign up for a Target Red Card (link with your checking account), you not only get 5% off of every purchase, but Target donates a percentage to our school when you link your Red Card to Parkview. Once you sign up (bring a check to Target and apply with any cashier) and receive your card, hop online and link our school to your Red Card. Both of these options give our school free money for things you would already be purchasing! It takes little effort and has a big payoff for our school! E. Volunteer Needs We have listed committees for this year on PTA website, along with the chair for that particular committee or event. There are a lot of opportunities open! New Business/Committee Reports A. Classroom Reps- Holly Rasmussen/Jaime White: Classroom reps were piloted last year. Every room has a parent who serves as the liaison between the PTA and classroom parents, teachers. Job duties: classroom rep attends PTA meetings; build communication between the PTA, teacher, parents, and along with the teacher, focus efforts on the Whole Child initiative. The PTA is working on fine-tuning this role and a detailed job description will be coming out soon. B. Scrip: Dhyana Schultz, Caprice Teske, Treva Coe: Buy gift cards for various places like Haggen, Village Books, Fred Meyer, The Learning Store, Acme Farms. Purchase these cards once a month and our school gets a percentage from the various stores! Every month Dhyanna will be by the PTA sandwich board, giving out cards for those who purchased, or you may request the cards to be sent home in your childs Panda Pocket. Orders due every month, or you can select ongoing. During the holidays there are extra cards that we can order for Scrip. An order form will go home every month in your childs Panda Pocket. C. After School program- Anna Booker: This year we have Girls On The Run (GOTR), Wild Whatcom for 1 st 5 th graders, and Lucia Arts for K-3 rd graders. The PTA is looking for a new coordinator to take on the after school (early release) program. Western Science Club is coming back for a winter session. Important to get rosters out to teachers of kiddos signed up for various sessions so they know who stays after school. One limiting factor is classrooms. We have to find teachers who are willing to let a workshop be in their room while they are prepping. D. Jogathon- Amy McKenney: Biggest fundraiser our school has! It is a very fun school event - lots of parent involvement! There is an assembly for kick-off this month, and an awards assembly at the in October, following the Jogathon. There is a lot of work and detail that goes into the Jogathon. Amy could really use help with the behind the scenes work. Laurel Carr is co-chairing with the intent to chair the Jogathon next year. Hang Guthrie also helps out with ribbons, t-shirts, etc. Would like to decrease fundraiser part of the event and increase the fun. Need sponsorships ($250, logo on back of t-shirt), prizes and awards for the awards assembly, donations. E. Boundary Bay Social Janet Giesen: Second Annual social and auction. Date October 1 st at Boundary Bay Beer Garden. There will be a silent auction, just come and enjoy. If you have anything to donate well take them! F. Healthy Snacks- Caprice Teske: In addition to fruit/veggies in the classroom every day provided by district, we have created a partnership with Acme Farms & Kitchen once a month to bring varied healthy snacks into the classroom. G. Garden Erica: As a school community we get to keep up the garden, and teachers need our help to maintain garden and volunteer when classes are working in the garden. We have 12 teachers who are using the garden in September. In the summertime we need one family per week to help maintain the garden. A post on the fence needs to be replaced or given more grounding with cement (anyone who is handy that could do this?). Garden in need of compost - $50.
