19S0's. Dur|ng the 19S0's there was w|despread |nterest |n psychoana|yt|c educat|on
throughout the Los Ange|es area, but forma| psychoana|yt|c tra|n|ng was not ava||ab|e
for non-med|ca| menta| hea|th profess|ona|s |n the U.S. As a resu|t, a group of
psycho|og|sts |nterested |n the study of psychoana|ys|s beg|n to arrange a var|ety of
|nforma| study groups, |ecture ser|es and weekend workshops for the purpose of
estab||sh|ng an ongo|ng forum |n psychoana|ys|s for psycho|og|sts and other
profess|ona|s |n the menta| hea|th]behav|ora| sc|ence f|e|ds.

1968. After more than a decade of offer|ng |nforma| programs on psychoana|ys|s,
Char|es Anse||, nedda 8o|gar, Lrnest Lawrence, Norman Cberman and Mart|n ke|ser
meet to p|an a tra|n|ng |nst|tute to offer bas|c tra|n|ng |n psychoana|ys|s. 1he|r efforts
cu|m|nate |n the estab||shment of the Los Ange|es Soc|ety for sychoana|yt|c
sycho|ogy, a const|tuent d|v|s|on of the Los Ange|es County sycho|og|ca|
Assoc|at|on. 1hey are subsequent|y [o|ned by other psycho|og|sts and soc|a| workers
who a|| together become known as the founders of LAISS.

1970. 1he Inst|tute |s formed w|th|n the Soc|ety to offer a systemat|c and
comprehens|ve psychoana|yt|c tra|n|ng program to non-med|ca| menta| and
behav|ora| hea|th profess|ona|s.

1978. In a ma[or step toward autonomy, the Inst|tute becomes the f|rst free-stand|ng,
|nterd|sc|p||nary psychoana|yt|c tra|n|ng Inst|tute |n Los Ange|es, known as the Los
Ange|es Inst|tute for sychoana|yt|c Stud|es (LAIS), |ead|ng to a Cert|f|cate |n
sychoana|ys|s.

1980. 1he Cand|date Assoc|at|on |s formed to g|ve the cand|dates a vo|ce |n the
Inst|tute. Soon thereafter, the cand|date representat|ve becomes a fu|| vot|ng
member of the 8oard of D|rectors. 1h|s wou|d be the beg|nn|ng of cand|date
|nvo|vement |n a|| aspects of the Inst|tute and Soc|ety that we have today.

1982. 1he Inst|tute |naugurates |ts Lxtens|on program, separate from the Cert|f|cate
|nstruct|ona| program. It |s a|med at reach|ng out to the Los Ange|es area menta|
hea|th commun|ty, and |eads to other programs such as the sychoana|yt|c
sychotherapy Cert|f|cate rogram (1998), the Lat|ng D|sorders rogram (2009), the
1rauma Stud|es rogram (2012), and the Infant, Lar|y Ch||d and arent sychotherapy
rogram (2013).

h||osophy (h.D.) |n sychoana|ys|s wh|ch |s then granted fu|| approva| by the State
of Ca||forn|a Counc|| for r|vate ostsecondary and Vocat|ona| Lducat|on |n 1990. 1h|s
|eads to the furtherance of the program to offer d|stance |earn|ng educat|on
opportun|t|es to cand|dates |n other member |nst|tutes of CIS to obta|n a h.D. |n
sychoana|ys|s.

198S. 1he Inst|tute |s reorgan|zed |nto two ma[or funct|ona| un|ts, the Inst|tute wh|ch
concerns |tse|f w|th the bas|c program of the educat|on, tra|n|ng and cert|fy|ng of
ana|ysts, and to the |mp|ementat|on of the doctora| program, and the Soc|ety wh|ch
represents the commun|ty of a|| members and the furtherance of a|| soc|ety funct|ons,
separate from the Inst|tute's focus of tra|n|ng ana|ysts. 1he name |s changed to 1he
Los Ange|es Inst|tute and Soc|ety for sychoana|yt|c Stud|es (LAISS).

198S - 1987. 1he GA |awsu|t |s f||ed by four psycho|og|sts represent|ng D|v|s|on 39
(|nc|ud|ng Lrnest Lawrence) aga|nst the AsaA and the IA for restra|nt of trade. 1he
resu|t|ng sett|ement a||ows psychoana|yt|c soc|et|es |n the Un|ted States outs|de the
AsaA to become |ndependent component soc|et|es of the IA and requ|res the AsaA
to accept non-med|ca| tra|nees.

1988. As a resu|t of the sett|ement of the |awsu|t, LAISS f||es |ts app||cat|on for
membersh|p |n the IA.

1991. 1he IA grants prov|s|ona| membersh|p status to LAISS at the IA Congress |n
8uenos A|res, Argent|na.

1991. 1he LAISS keferra| Serv|ce |s |naugurated, offer|ng affordab|e psychoana|ys|s
and psychoana|yt|c psychotherapy w|th ||censed c||n|c|ans who are cand|dates |n
psychoana|yt|c tra|n|ng or members who are cert|f|ed psychoana|ysts.

1992. LAISS |s granted approva| by the State of Ca||forn|a Med|ca| 8oard, d|v|s|on of
A|||ed nea|th rofess|ons to conduct a kesearch sychoana|yst 1ra|n|ng rogram.

1992. 1he Coa||t|on of Independent sychoana|yt|c Soc|et|es (IS) |s estab||shed, a|ong
w|th the three other non-med|ca| soc|et|es |n the U.S. that had won IA membersh|p,
1he Inst|tute for sychoana|yt|c 1ra|n|ng and kesearch (I1Ak), 1he New ork Ireud|an
Soc|ety (now known as the Contemporary Ireud|an Soc|ety), and the sychoana|yt|c
Center of Ca||forn|a (CC). 1he name |s |ater changed to the Confederat|on of
Independent sychoana|yt|c Soc|et|es (CIS). Its purpose |s to represent the |nterests
of |ts component soc|ety members to the psychoana|yt|c commun|ty |oca||y, nat|ona||y
and |nternat|ona||y.

199S. LAISS |s accepted |nto fu|| membersh|p to the IA at the San Iranc|sco
Congress. Many LAISS members attend the Congress and cheer voc|ferous|y when
membersh|p |s announced by IA res|dent norac|o Ltchegoyen.

1996. 1he Iean 8. Sanv|||e Wr|t|ng Award |s |nst|tuted to be awarded to LAISS
members for scho|arsh|p |n the wr|t|ng of an or|g|na| unpub||shed paper on
psychoana|ys|s.

2000. LAISS |s granted approva| by the State of Ca||forn|a Department of Lducat|on
to offer a Doctorate of sycho|ogy |n sychoana|ys|s (sy.D.), |n con[unct|on w|th
grant|ng the Cert|f|cate of sychoana|ys|s upon comp|et|on of a|| of the spec|f|ed
tra|n|ng requ|rements.

2000. LAISS ce|ebrates the th|rt|eth ann|versary of |ts estab||shment w|th a ga|a
ce|ebrat|on and fund ra|ser toward the estab||shment of what |s now known as the
Lrnest S. Lawrence 1rauma Center, wh|ch prov|des free psychoana|yt|ca||y or|ented
psychotherapy to the underserved, "at r|sk" popu|at|on by vo|unteer LAISS members,
cand|dates and aff|||ates.

2004. rofess|ona|s Aff|||ated w|th LAISS (ALS) |s |naugurated as a commun|ty
outreach program to offer |nterested profess|ona|s the opportun|ty to |earn about
psychoana|ys|s from a theoret|ca| and c||n|ca| perspect|ve. ALS members meet
month|y w|th a LAISS fac|||tator. 1hrough the|r membersh|p they a|so part|c|pate |n
LAISS spec|a| events and act|v|t|es.

2014. 1he M|chae| I. D|amond Cand|date Lssay Award |s |nst|tuted for cand|dates who

2014. 1he LAISS Student Soc|ety |s estab||shed for graduate students and |nterns to
exp|ore psychoana|yt|c th|nk|ng |n month|y meet|ngs and to rece|ve mentor|ng from
LAISS members, |nc|ud|ng 3 consu|tat|on sess|ons a year.

2014. 1he LAISS Aff|||ate Soc|ety |s |aunched to offer ||censed c||n|c|ans w|th an
|nterest |n psychoana|ys|s the opportun|ty to be part of the LAISS commun|ty.
Members attend S year|y meet|ngs that |nc|ude presentat|ons by LAISS members on
