หมวดตน ( The self )

1. อตฺตานฺจ ปยํ ชฺญา รกฺเขยฺย นํ สุรกฺขิตํ

ติณฺณมฺญตรํ ยามํ ปฎิชคฺเคยฺย ปณฺฑิโต ฯ

ถารูวาตนเปนที่รัก พึงรักษาตนไวใหดี
บัณฑิตควรประคับประคองตนไว ไมทั้งสามวัยก็วัยใดวัยหนึ่ง .

If one holds oneself dear

One should protect oneself well
During any of the three wathes [of life]
The wise should keep vigil.

2. อตฺตานเมว ปฐมํ ปฏิรูเป นิเวสเย

อถฺญมนุสาเสยฺย น กิลิสฺเสยฺย ปณฺฑิโต ฯ

คนที่จะสอนคนอื่น ตัวเองควรทําใหดีกอน
คนฉลาดทําไดอยางนี้ จึงไมเกิดความเสื่อมเสียแกตนเอง .

One should first establish oneself

In what is proper,
And them instruct others.
A wise man who acts in this way
Shall never get defiled.

3. อตฺตานฺจ ตถา กยิรา ยถฺญมนุสาสติ

สุทนฺโต วต ทเมถ อตฺตา หิ กิร ทุทฺทโม ฯ

คนเราสอนคนอื่นอยางใด ตัวเองควรทําไดอยางนั้น
ใหเราฝกตนเองใหดีเสียกอน แลวคอยไปสอนคนอื่น .
เพราะวา ตัวเราเองฝกยากยิ่งนัก

As he instructs others
He should himself act
Himself fully controlled
He should control others
Difficult indeed is to control oneself.

4. อตฺตา หิ อตฺตโน นาโถ โก หิ นาโถ ปโร สิยา

อตฺตนา หิ สุทนฺเตน นาถํ ลภติ ทุลฺลภํ ฯ

ตนแล เปนที่พึ่งของตนเอง คนอื่นใครเลาจะเปนที่พึ่งได

คนที่ฝกฝนตนเองดีแลว ยอมไดที่พึ่งที่ไดแสนยาก .

Oneself ideeed is master of oneself

Who else could other master be ?
With oneself perfectly trained
One obtains a refuge hard to gain.
5. อตฺตนาว กตํ ปาป อตฺรชํ อตฺตสมฺภวํ
อภิมตฺถติ ทุมฺเมธํ วชิรํวมฺหยํ มณึ ฯ

ความชั่วที่ตนเองทํา ที่เกิดขึ้นใจตนเอง และตนเองเปนตนเหตุ

ยอมทําลายคนโงใหยอยยับไป เหมือนเพชรทําลายแกวมณี

The evil, done by oneself

Self-begotten and self-produced,
Crushes the witless one
As the dianond grinds a hard gem.

6. ยสฺส อจฺจนฺตทุสฺสีลย
ฺ ํ มาลุวา สาลมิโวตฺถตํ
กโรติ โส ตถตฺตานํ ยถา นํ อิจฺฉติ ทิโส ฯ

คนไมมีศีล ก็เหมือนกับตนไมที่เถาวัลยขึ้นจนรก
เขาทําตัวเองใหวอดวายเอง ไมตองรอใหศต ั รูมาคอยทําลาย

An exceedingly corrupted man is like

A creeper strangling a tree
Surely he does unto himself
What his enemy would wish for him.

7. สุกรานิ อสาธูนิ อตฺตโน อหิตานิ จ

ยํ เว หิตญจ สาธุฺจ ตํ เว ปรมทุกฺกรํ ฯ

กรรมไมดีและไมมีประโยชนแกตน มักทํางาย
สวนกรรมดีและมีประโยชน ทําไดยากยิ่ง.

Easy to do are those karmas

Which are bad and not benefitting oneself
But those which are good and beneficial
Are dificutl indeed to be performed.

8. โย สาสนํ อรหตํ อริยานํ ธมฺมชีวินํ

ปฎิกฺโกสติ ทุมฺเมโธ ทิฏฐึ นิสฺสาย ปาปกํ
ผลานิ กณฺฏกสฺเสว อตฺตฆฺญาย ผลฺลติ ฯ

คนทรามปญญา มีความเห็นผิด ติเตียนคําสอนของเหลาพระอริยะ

ผูเปนอรหันต ผูมีชีวิตอยูโดยธรรม เขายอมเกิดมาเพื่อฆาตัวเขาเอง
เหมือนขุยไผ ฆาตนไผฉะนั้น .

Whoso on account of false views

Scorns the teaching of the Noble Ones
The Worhty and Righteous Ones
He, the foolish man, destroys himself
Like the bamboo, seeding, finds its end.
9. อตฺตนาว กตํ ปาป อตฺตนา สงฺกิลิสฺสติ
อตฺตนา อกตํ ปาป อตฺตนาว วิสุชฺฌติ
สุทธิ อสุทฺธิ ปจฺจตฺตํ นาญโญ อฺญํ วิโสธเย ฯ

คนเราทําบาปเองก็เศราหมองเอง ไมทําบาปก็บริสุทธิด ์ วยตนเอง

ความบริสุทธิ์หรือไมบริสุทธิ์เปนของมีอยูเฉพาะตน
คนอื่นจะทําใหคนอืน
่ บริสุทธิ์ เปนไปไมได .

By oneself is evil don?

By oneself does one get defiled
By oneself is evil left undone
By oneself is one purified
Purity or impurity depends on oneself
No one can purity another .

10. อตฺตทตฺถํ ปรตฺเถน พหุนาป น หาปเย

อตฺตทตฺถมฺภิญญาย สทตฺถปสุโต สิยา ฯ

ถึงจะทําประโยชนแกสังคมมากมาย
ก็ไมควรทิ้งจุดหมายปลายทางของตน
รูวาอะไรคือประโยชนของตนแลว ควรรีบขวนขวายทํา.

Fall not away from one's own purpose

For the sake of another, however great,
when once one has seen one's own goal,
One should hold to it fast and firm.
