Acids and alkalis

ACIDS
An acid is a chemical substance whose aqueous
solution are characterized by a sour taste.
Acids turn blue litmus red and the ability to react with
base and certain metals to form salt.
Aqueous solution of acids have a pH of less than 7.A
lower pH means a higher acidity and thus a higher
concentration of positive hydrogen ion in the solution.
Chemicals or substance having the property of an acid
are said to be acidic.
Acids have the following
properties:
Have a pH value less than pH 7
Turn blue litmus indicator red
Can neutralise an alkali
Have a sour taste .
ALKALI
In chemistry ,an alkali is an aqueous solution with
pH value of more than 7
The word alkali comes from the Arabic quali
meaning from the ashes.
Ashes mixed with water used as cleaning products
are made of alkali material

pH is defined as the negative logarithm of
hydrogen in ion concentration
in moles /litre

Characteristics.
It feels soapy
It is corrosive (it can burn your skin away)
The higher the number is over 7 on the pH scale the
stronger the alkali is.
Highly soluble (can be dissolved) in water
They have a bitter taste
Turns red litmus paper blue
Can conduct electricity due to the presence of mobile
ions
Is blue or purple on universal indicator
