Assignment 3: DC Generators

Due Date: Thursday 20
th
February by 5:00 pm (TA room inside the EMS Lab)
Instructions: Show all the steps. Answers without calculations would not be accepted.

Q1. A separately excited DC generator is shown in Fig. 1. The magnetization curve for the generator operating
at 1800 r/min is shown in Figure 2. The generator is rated at 6 kW, 120 V. Its field circuit is rated at 6 A.
The following data are known about the machine:

RA = 0.20 Radj = 0 - 40 RF = 20 VF= 120 V

Assuming that the generator has compensating windings,

a) Find the no-load voltage range that can be achieved by changing Radj for a speed of 1800 r/min.

b) A load is now connected across the terminals of the generator. If Radj is allowed to vary from 0 - 40
and the speed is allowed to vary from 1600 to 2000 r/min, find the maximum and minimum terminal
voltage, given that the load draws a constant current of 40A.

c) For the same load as in part b, the generator is now operated at 1700 r/min, and the terminal voltage is
found to be 112 V. Find the field current flowing through the generator.

d) Assume now that there are no compensating windings (i.e. armature reaction is present). The effect of
the armature reaction is to decrease the mmf through the field winding, which can be modeled as a
decrease in the effective field current. For the generator operating at the same conditions as in part c,
the field current is now set to be 6 A (Radj=0). However, the armature reaction decreases the effective
field current to 5A. Find the terminal voltage in this case and compare it with the terminal voltage
obtained without armature reaction.

e) The machine is now reconnected as a shunt generator, as shown in Fig. 3. Radj is set to 10 , and the
speed is set at 1800 r/min. Find the no-load terminal voltage of the generator.

f) A load is now connected across the terminals of the shunt generator in part e. The terminal voltage is
measured to be 116V. Find the field current, armature current and load current in this case. Hence find
the power consumed by the load.
