MULTIPLICATION

VOCABULARY
ARRAY
A visual representation of a
multiplication equation where objects
are arranged in equal rows.

A picture that represents a
multiplication sentence.
ARRAY

This array represents 2 groups of 6 items.
2 x 6 = 12
ARRAY
This array represents 6
groups of 2 items.

6 x 2 = 12
PRODUCT
The answer to a multiplication problem.

5 x 8 = 40

Product
FACTOR
The numbers multiplied together to find
the product.

7 x 4 = 40

Factor Factor
4 x 3 = 12

FACTOR FACTOR PRODUCT
MULTIPLE
The product of a number and any
whole number.

For example:
3, 6, 9, and 12 are all multiples of 3.
Why?
Because 3x1=3, 3x2=6, 3x3=9, and 3x4=12.

MULTIPLE
6, 12, 18, 24, and 36 are all multiples of 6.

Those are all multiples of 6 because if
something was multiplied by 6, those would
be products of the equation.

6 x 1 = 6, 6 x 2 = 12, 6 x 3 = 18; etc.

COMMUTATIVE PROPERTY
of MULTIPLICATION
Any two factors multiplied in any order
will give the same product.

Or

Two numbers can be multiplied in any
order and the answer will still be the
same.

COMMUTATIVE PROPERTY
of MULTIPLICATION

4 x 3 = 12 is the same as 3 x 4 = 12

So

4 x 3 = 3 x 4

ZERO PROPERTY of
MULTIPLICATION
The product of any number and zero is zero.

Simply

ANY NUMBER TIMES ZERO IS ZERO!
ZERO PROPERTY of
MULTIPLICATION
ANYTHING x 0 = 0
0 x ANYTHING = 0

0 x 2 = 0
7 x 0 = 0
13 x 0 = 0
0 x 26 = 0
297 x 0 = 0
0 x 9,785 = 0
10,720 x 0 = 0
0 x 820,128 = 0
1,371,530 x 0 = 0
0 x 26,029,459 = 0
789,297,187 x 0 = 0
0 x 4,159,785,028 = 0
IDENTITY PROPERTY of
MULTIPLICATION
The product of any number and one is that same number.

Simply

ANY NUMBER TIMES ONE IS ITSELF!
IDENTITY PROPERTY of
MULTIPLICATION
ANYTHING x 1 = ITSELF
1 x ANYTHING = ITSELF

1 x 2 = 2
7 x 1 = 7
13 x 1 = 13
1 x 26 = 26
297 x 1 = 297
1 x 9,785 = 9,785
10,720 x 1 = 10,720
1 x 820,128 = 820,128
1,371,530 x 1 = 1,371,530
1 x 26,029,459 = 26,029,459
789,297,187 x 1 = 789,297,187
1 x 4,159,785,028 = 4,159,785,028
