Soap Presentation Peer Feedback

Point Comment
How clear was the
definition of the sub-
genre?
The definition of their particular soap gave good background
information and covered influences which UK soaps had on the
Australian soaps. It set the scene of what to expect when
watching Australian soaps.
Has a range of
examples of soaps
from this sub-genre
been
communicated?
They gave great examples of soaps including Home & Away
and Neighbours, with detailed explanations on the conventions
from each of them. They compared examples from each of the
clips they shown and described how some aspects were
different depending on the location where the soap was set.
How clear is the
analysis of
cinematography?
The group told a detailed explanation of the fact that these kinds
of soaps use studio filming, unlike UK soaps that film on
location. They used excellent example from the clips and
identified and explained the shots and why they were used e.g.
shot reverse shot to show a conversation between characters.
How clear is the
analysis of editing?
The group used specific examples of editing. They identified the
editing techniques well used in the clips. They mentioned the
narrative structure e.g. one of the clips was an open ended
narrative, which meant that it left a cliff-hanger for the audience
so they would watch the next episode. They also mentioned that
eye-line matched was covered, which is a form of continuity
editing and shows were the characters were looking.
How clear is the
analysis of sound?
They covered each of the theme tunes for the soaps they used,
and explained that this made the show have their own identity.
They covered diegetic and non-diegetic dialogue in excellent
detail, explaining the difference and identifying specific
examples for both and from both clips. Also explaining that the
non-diegetic sound used represented the mood of the
characters. They explained that as their sub-genre was
Australian soaps you would accept the character to have
Australian accents, which was found in the clips from all the
characters.
How clear is the
analysis of mise en
scene?
They link the MES to the camera and explained that because
the soaps will be filmed in a studio that they would have to use
props and lighting to make the setting look realistic for the
audience. They mentioned the clothing of the characters and
what the represented e.g. they wore short, vest tops and
dresses because it is based in Australia so this links to the hot
weather that is stereotyped.
How clear is the
communication of
storylines? Have
examples been
used?
They explained the storylines very well and used typical
examples of them for each soap e.g. in Home & Away they are
lots of storylines involving drugs and alcohol. They mentioned
that they have multi strand narratives. They also referred to the
soap as creating realism for the audience.
How clear is the
communication of
themes? Have
examples been
used?
They compared and contrasted the different themes between
the two soaps they selected. The themes were referred to
throughout their presentation giving clear and specific examples
from the clips and from other episodes of the soap.
Are the descriptions
of characters clear?
Have these been
supported with
examples?
They used good references to characters in relation to the genre
e.g. Australian accents. They also covered the stereotypes e.g.
in Home & Away they find drugs, which is a stereotype of
teenagers.
Is it clear how the
soaps have been
exhibited/consumed?
(institutional details)
They used excellent examples of institutional details explaining
when they were first aired and what time and channel they are
on each day. This was always referred to throughout their
presentation.
