Dealing Down Game Report

In math class, we played a game called Dealing Down. This
game involves players using positive and negative numbers.
The players must perform many operations to get the lowest
possible answer.
When youre adding two positive numbers together, the
answer will always be a positive number. However, when youre
adding a negative and a positive number you must subtract
because the signs are different. For example, -5 + 4= -1.
Another example is, -7 + 8 = 1. If you add a negative number
with another negative number, the sum is always a negative
number.
The rules for multiplying negative number and positive
numbers are easy to do. If the signs are the same, the product is
positive. For example, 3 x 2 =6 and -3 x -2 = 6. If the signs are
different the product will always be negative. Example,
2 x -3 = -6. The rules for dividing positive and negative number
are the same as multiplying.
The reason why the order of operation exists is to have a
consistent way of doing calculations. The order of operations is
to do everything inside parentheses first. then do exponents, like
x
2
. Next, multiply and divide from left to right. Lastly do the
addition and subtraction from left to right. Here is an example of
how to follow the order of operations: 5 (3 + 4) - 2 8 = 5 7
- 2 8 = 35 - 16 = 19
The Commutative Property of Addition and Multiplication
have the same rule which is, order does not matter. This makes it
easier to solve math problems. If you change the order of the
addends in addition like this: 3+7=10 & 7+3=10 the sum is the
same. In multiplication if you change the order of the factors,
the product will be the same. For example, 3x7=21 & 3x7=21.
The distributive property of Addition and Multiplication
states that multiplying a sum by a number gives the same result
as multiplying each addend by the number and then adding the
products together. For example, 4 (2 + 3) = 4 2 + 4 3

I learned that when playing the Dealing Down game, you
have to know a lot of math strategies. You must use many
operations to get the best answer. A strategy that I used was
dividing negative numbers that had exponents to get the smallest
number possible. Writing this report helped me realize that
multiplying positive and negative numbers have the same rules.
I also got a better understanding of what Commutative Property
is.
