Lesson 7: Analysing graphs part two

Estimated Time:
60 minutes

Lesson Objectives:
View and read written, visual and multimodal learning area texts that: connect
relationships between ideas and concepts VR6 (ii).
Analyse how analytical images e.g. symbols, tables, flowcharts, contribute to
understanding and interpretation of texts VR6 (viii)
Use visual features for impact, including using placement on the page, choice of
colours and analytical images, e.g. figures, tables, diagrams, maps and graphs WC6
(xii)

Class Organisation:
Whole class teacher led, individual

Resources:
Messi goals fact sheet 2 (adapted from):

91-goal-year-for-barcelona-and-argentina

Learning Experiences:
1. Give students copy of Messi goals fact sheet 1, go through the sheet with the
students explaining what the bar graphs show
2. Write on board the monthly goals in a list format, then ask the students which
representation if the data is easier to understand (generate a class discussion write
responses on board in concept map - revisiting previous lesson information
3. Write up some fictional data on the board for goals scored (eg. 65 goals scored in a 60
games 5 games per month)
4. Students will then work to create two bar graphs using this data in a similar manner
to Messis graphs (goals per month, goals per game)

Assessment:
Students will assessed on their bar graphs

Adjustments:
Students having difficulty can be guided by the teacher or assistant to create graphs
together
Extension activity could be to create more graphs using their own data
