Class Organisation:
Whole class teacher led, pairs

Resources:
Messi highlights video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0461GZ27SwQ
Messi goals fact sheet 1 (adapted from):
http://bleacherreport.com/articles/1456355-breaking-down-lionel-messis-magical-
91-goal-year-for-barcelona-and-argentina

Learning Experiences:
1. Play Messi highlights video, explain to students who is is and what he has achieved
2. Give students copy of Messi goals fact sheet 1, go through the sheet with the
students explaining what the pie charts show
3. Write on board the number of goals scored by Messi in all tournaments in a list
format, then ask the students which representation of the data is easier to
understand to generate a class discussion, explain that the visual representation adds
more effect to the information than a written form
4. Write up some fictional data on the board for goals scored for various fictional soccer
tournaments, students will then work in pairs to create two pie charts using this data
in a similar manner to Messis.

Assessment:
Students will assessed on their pie charts

Adjustments:
Students having difficulty can be placed together in a group and guided by the
teacher or assistant to create charts together or paired with a student who is
confident with the activity
Extension activity could be to create more pie charts using their own fictional data
