PHStat2 Version 2.7 Readme.

PHStat2 is Windows software that assists you in learning the concepts of statistics while using Microsoft
Excel. PHStat2 allows you to perform many common types of statistical analyses working with and using the
familiar Microsoft Excel interface.
The rest of this document is organied into sections hat will assist you in setting up and using PHStat2.

1 Technical requirements for PHStat2
There are separate re,uirements for using PHStat2 and running the PHStat2 setup program. The
re,uirements for running the setup program are more exclusi"e. !f you plan to setup PHStat2# make sure to
re"iew all of the re,uirements that follow.
Requirements for using PHStat2:
Windows <7=<7SE=ME=&T 3.1=2111=>P (any "ersion*=?ista computer system.
Microsoft Excel <2# 2111# 2112(>P*# 2110# or 2112. Excel <2 users must apply the S@/2 or a later free
update from Microsoft.
Microsoft Excel Aata .nalysis ToolPak and .nalysis ToolPakB?C. add/ins installed (supplied on the
Microsoft Dffice=Excel program -A*.
Eor Excel 2111 through Excel 2110# Microsoft Dffice macro security le"el set to edium (see topic 0 in
:-onfiguring Microsoft Excel Security for PHStat2;* Eor Excel 2112# Trust -enter Macro Settings set
to !isable all macros "ith notification (recommended* or #nable all macros (not recommended*.
See section 0a or 0) for more details. (There are no security settings in Excel <2 or the original#
unpatched "ersion of Excel 2111.*

Requirements for running the PHStat2 setu$ $rogram:
-A or A?A dri"e.
.pproximately +1 MC hard disk free space while running the setup program and 0 MC hard disk space
after program setup. Dn some older systems# the Windows system files that may get replaced or
added during the setup process will re,uire up to 6 MC additional hard disk space.
Windows user account with administrator or software/installing pri"ileges (applies only to Windows
&T=2111=>P=?ista or networked users only*. Student or faculty accounts used to login onto
networked computers in academic settings typically do not ha"e this pri"ilege. !f you ha"e such an
account# ask your network or la) technician for assistance.

!f you are using an Excel "ersion earlier than Excel 2112# you need to "erify that two add/ins that are
included on the Dffice of Excel program disk ha"e )een already installed. To dou)le/check that your copy of
Microsoft Excel contains these add/ins# open Microsoft Excel and select Tools &dd'(ns. !n the .dd/!ns
dialog )ox that appears# "erify that the &nal)sis ToolPa* and &nal)sis ToolPa* ' V+& check )oxes
appear in the &dd'(ns a,ailable list. !f they do not appear# you will need to rerun the Microsoft Excel (or
Microsoft Dffice* setup program and select these components. !f these add/ins do appear# "erify that they
are checked. !f the two check )oxes are unchecked# click )oth of them# then click -.# and then exit Excel to
sa"e these settings.
/a Configuring #%cel 2000'200/ Securit) for PHStat2
The Microsoft Dffice macro security le"el must )e set to edium in order to allow PHStat2 to properly
function. To dou)le/check that the security le"el is not set to High# which would pre"ent PHStat2 from
functioning properly# open Microsoft Excel and select Tools acro Securit). !n the Securit) 1e,el ta) of
the Security dialog )ox that appears# click the edium option and then click -..
Setting the security le"el in this dialog )ox# affects all Microsoft Dffice programs. When you are finished
using PHStat2# you can set the security le"el to High# for greatest security. (!f you set the le"el to High#
remem)er to reset the le"el to Medium )efore you next open and use PHStat2.*.
!f you cannot see the Macro choice on the Tools menu# it may )e hidden from "iew due to the way that
Microsoft Dffice is currently displaying menu choices. To dou)le/check this# open Microsoft Excel and select
Tools Customi2e. !n the -ustomie dialog )ox# clear (uncheck* the enus sho" recentl) used
commands first check )ox if it is checked and click Close. -learing this check )ox will cause e"ery
Microsoft Dffice program to show e"ery choice on e"ery menu. (Fou can re"erse this setting at any time.*
-learing this check )ox will also )e helpful when using PHStat2 as you will )e always a)le to see e"ery
choice on the PHStat menu that appears inside Excel.

/b Configuring #%cel 2007 Securit) for PHStat2
Fou must change the Trust -enter settings to allow PHStat2 to properly function. -lick the -ffice +utton#
and then click #%cel -$tions in the Dffice menu. !n the Excel Dptions dialog )ox that appears# click Trust
Center and then in the Trust -enter panel# click Trust Center Settings.
!n the left pane of the Trust -enter dialog )ox that appears# first click &dd'(ns and clear# if necessary all
of the check )oxes under the .dd/ins )anner. &ext# click acro Settings in the left pane and click either
!isable all macros "ith notification (recommended* or #nable all macros (not recommended# use only if
the other choice fails to allow PHStat2 to function properly*.
3 Setting u$ PHStat2
To use PHStat2# you first need to run the PHStat2 setup program to add PHStat2 to your system. Cefore
using the setup program# make sure you ha"e re"iewed the details of the pre"ious two sections and ha"e
"erified that your copy of Microsoft Excel is properly configured and that your system meets all technical
re,uirements listed in section +. Ha"ing "erified these things# use ) Com$uter or any 4indo"s #%$lorer
window to locate the Setu$.e%e program entry in the -A/@DM PHStat2 folder. Aou)le/click this entry to
)egin the PHStat2 setup process.
Auring setup# PHStat2 program files will )e copied to your hard disk# Windows system files may )e
updated# if necessary# and Aesktop icons and a Start Menu program group for PHStat2 will )e created. .s
the setup program runs# you will )e stepped through a series of dialog )oxes in which you need to click the
5e%t )utton to proceed. !mportant information# such as the terms of the license of use# will )e presented and
you will ha"e an opportunity to change the default target directory (Program 6iles7PHStat2* for the PHStat2
files.
When the setup program completes successfully# you may )e asked to re)oot your system )efore using
PHStat2.

Fou use PHStat2 )y dou)le/clicking the Aesktop PHStat2 icon or selecting PHStat2 from the Start menu
PHStat2 program group. !f you prefer# you can use the Excel (Eile* Dpen dialog )ox to open the PHStat2.xla
file# containing the component of PHStat2 that works inside Microsoft Excel. Dnce properly loaded# PHStat2
will add a new PHStat menu to the Microsoft Excel menu )ar# if you are using Excel <2/2110. !f you are
using Excel 2112# this menu will appear in the .dd/!ns ta).
When you use the correct Excel security settings (see Section 0a or 0)*# you will see a macro "irus
warning dialog )ox as you attempt to open PHStat2. Should this dialog )ox appear# click the #nable
acros )utton to allow PHStat2 ("irus/free# as shipped* to )e opened.

7 Troubleshooting PHStat2.
9nable to com$lete the PHStat2 setu$ $rocess. @e"iew the section $Technical re,uirements for Phstat2.$
Most pro)lems of this type are caused )y user accounts that do not permission to setup up application
software in a networked en"ironment.
PHStat menu fails to o$en or fails to a$$ear on the icrosoft #%cel menu bar. The macro security
setting is incorrect. -hange setting to Medium option as explained in Section 0a or 0). Gess likely# this
pro)lem can also )e caused )y certain settings in older anti/"irus programs that ha"e not )een properly
updated.
<9ne%$ected error< message "hen running a PHStat2 $rocedure. Eirst "erify that PHStat2 was properly
set up of your system. Then re"iew the PHStat2 help system topics for the procedure as well as the
