Case Study Matera Some social features of Basilicata: poor agriculture. 92% of industries
have less than 10 employees. Last year the crisis was strong and the numer of employees
decreased. Agriculture in the last year increased.
Tourism: 60% of bed nights are on the coastal area, on the Metapontino, Ionio Sea. In Basilicata
we had a lot of bed places, 10% is Maratea on the coast. 8.6% in Matera, which is one hour from
Bari.
Why matera is an interesting case? We have to start from the old town. Rough and arid land
with some narrow valleys with many caves. The valleys are named Gravina.
