The EU strongly condemns the deadly attack against the Yeongpyong Island launched on
2 !o"ember 2010 by the Democratic #eople$s %epublic o& 'orea in breach o& the 1()
*rmistice *greement+
The EU calls on both sides o& the 'orean con&lict to re&rain &rom any actions leading to
&urther escalation o& the hostilities+
,i"en the latest de"elopments o& the 'orean con&lict, stemming &rom the contro"ersial
border in the Yello- .ea, and their implications &or regional security, the EU -ill consult
closely -ith the 'orean authorities and other interested parties on the peace negotiation
process in the #eninsula+ /oreo"er, the EU -ill appoint an obser"er to monitor &urther
de"elopments on the spot and to report on the actual state o& the dispute+
The EU -elcomes the declaration o& the 0hinese 1oreign /inistry urging both sides to
sho- 2calm and restraint3 and engage in talks in order to a"oid &urther escalation o& the
tensions and e4presses its support &or an international condemnation o& the !o"ember 2
artillery attack, -hich killed &our people including t-o ci"ilians+ 0onse5uently, the
European Union calls on all .tates concerned to intensi&y e&&orts to promote enduring
peace and stability in the region+
