1. SCOPE
1.1 This specification covers one type of Brouming,
Caliber .30, Machine Gun, with shoulder stock and biped mount,
emd known as Gun, Machine, Browning, Caliber .30, M1919A6.

3. RXQUIRR411NTS
3.1 m.
3.1.1 Materials.- Materials shall
drawings end specifications, or shall be

Braxing, welding, heat-treatment, pro-
tective coatings for corrosion protection, riveting, staking,
and other manufacturing processes shall be as specified in the
applicable drawings and Specification 52-O-1.
3.1.3 Additional suecific requirements.
3.1.3.1 Sarrel.- The eol.argementof the chamber due to
proof-firng shall not exceed 0.001 inch. After proof-firing, the
dimensions of the chamber and bore shell not exceed the limits
shown on the applicable drawing.
3.1.3.2 ~ - Following proof-firing, dimensions of the
bolt shall be within the limits shown on applicable drawing, with
no set-back of the face. All operating surfaces shall be smooth
and free from any defects which may affect its functioning. The
T-slot shall be free from any roughness which may intensify the
collection of brass particles during feeding or extraction of
cartridge cases.
3.1.3.3 Cover assemb~ .- The belt feed lever, slide,and
pawl shall function smoothly when assembled to feed from either
left-hand or right-hand side.

3.1.3.4 Extractor assembl~. The extractor aesembly ehall
pivot emoothly In the bolt. The ejector and the extractor cam
plunger shallact freely under their aprlng tenelon.
3.1.3.5 DrlvlnR aDrinR rod essembly. The driving eprlng
rod assembly ehall move freely in the bolt when both are aaeem.

3.1.3.6 Firinu Pin aaaembl~. The firing pin aesembly ehell

3.1.3.7 sDrims. - All springs shall be capable oigym-
nastication testing in accordance with the applicable drawings.
3.1.3.8 Lockim? devices. All locking devices shall main-
tain properad]uatment during firing and during handling of the
weapon.
All other parts shall conform to

3.2 Manufacturing assemblies.- AIIassembly consisting of
two or more parts combined for machining or other operationa
shall conform to the requirements specified for individual parts.

3.4 Assembled uuns.
3.4.1 The gun shell be assembled aa shown on the
applicable draw~gs =d in a reamer to meet the following re-
quirements before and after all firing tests.
3.4.1.1 Cockiw lever. The cocking lever shell retract
the sear engaging notch of the firing pin not lees then 0.010
inch beyond the engaging point of the eear.
3.!+.1.2 Piring pin protrusion. The firing pin ehall pro-
trude from the face of the bolt 0.060 to 0.068 inch when in the
forward or firing position.

3.i+.l.4 Tri&b?er Pull.
The trigger pull necessary to op-
erate the gun ehall be 7 to 12 pounds-when meaeured at the center
of the bow in a line at right anglee to the bore and parallel
with the aide plates. The meaauremant may be made with the back
plate removed. The wbapone eubmltted to the endurance teat
specified herein shall ~oecapable of meeting at i.east
75 percent of the original.specified trigger pull upon
completion of the endurance test.
3.4.1.5 Headspace.- Each completed weapon shell be
within the proper headspace requirements when gaged with a
.123-inch go end .128-inch not go gage.
3.4.1.6 Cyclic rate.- The rate of fire shall be within
the range of 425 to 550 rounds per minute using U. S. Government
caliber .30 standard service ball ammunition when firing from
the biped mount. The normal rate may be expected to be within
the range of 500 to 650 rounds per mimte when mounted on a
rigid test stand approved by the Government inspector.
3.5 Marking.
3.5.1 COmDleted weapons.- Unlees otherwise specified,
each @u? shell be marked in the position and size specified on
the drawings end as specified in Specification 52-0-1.
3.5.2 Components.- Components and assemblies shall be
marked with the manufacturers symbol,
the Ordnance part number
only, or both, as specified on the part number Identlficatlon
drawing or the individual part drawin~.
3.6 Gwnnastication.- Each completed gun shall be placed
in a gymnastication fixture furr.ishedby the contractor and
mechanically gymnasticated for a minimum of 500 cycles prior
to any firing tests.
3.7 Proof-firing.
3.7.1 Assembled guns.- Each gun shall be capable of with-
standing proof-firing with one U. S. Government high pressure
proof cartridge withoutstructural failures or distortions that
would affect functioning of the weapon.
3.7.2 Suare barrels. barrel extensions. end bolte. Each
barrel, barrel extension, and bolt intended as spare parfs shell

be proof-fired using one proof cartridge each.
Fixtures for
proof-firing these parts shall be provided by the contractor.
Following proof-firing, these parts shall meet the requirements
specified herein and on the drawings.
3.8 Function firin&.- Each assembled gun shall be capable
of withstanding the fiction firing test specified herein,wlth
no breakeges or malfunctions of the gun or biped mount, using
standard U. S. Government caliber .30 ball ammunition in metallic
belts.
3.9 Endurance firing.- Assembled guns shell be capable of
withstanding an endurance test Of 10,OOO rounds when tested as
specified harein. Breakeges end malfunctions shall be limited
to those specified in table I. U. S. Government standard caliber
.30 ball ammunition, in metallic belts, shall be used in the test.
3.10 Accurac~.- Accuracy of the weapons shell be such that
at least nine rounds of a 10-round burst, fired full machine gun
action, shall group within a 3-inch circle when fired at a 100-
foot range. Romds that cut the edge of the 3 inch circla .
shall be considered as acceptable.
3.11 Lubrication.- Each machine gun shall be adequately
lubricated t~;h;u; ~1 firing tests end prior to Government
acceptance. . .
3.12 Workmanshi~.- Standards of workmanship shell be such
that equipment will meet the requirements of 3.1 through 3.11.
All components, subassemblies, parts, and the final assembly
shall meet the inspection requirements for defects in quality and
dimensions as specified in 4.3.

4. Q.MLITY ASSURANCE
4.1 Lot size.
4.1.1 ~- The lot
or complete sets of Darts.

ment inspector end contractor based upon existing conditions
end facilities.
4.1.2 Spare parts.- fienspare parts are specified by the
contract, the lot size of those parts submitted for inspection
shall be any quantity, but not less than a quantity proportional
to the lot of completely assembled guns submitted for final
inspection.
4.2 SSMDlin&.
4.E.I. a - Unless otherwise specified herein for flrlng
tests, inspection and functional tests shall be performed on each
sun.
Unless otherwise specified; non-conformance to.drawinss end
all specified requirements shell constitute a critical defect and
shaLl result in the rejection of the gun, until SUCH defect has
been corrected.
4.2.2 ~. - Sempling procedures for less then 100 per-
cent inspection shell be in accordmce with the standard sampling
procedures of ORD-SIP-S6.
4.2.3 ACCeDtSnCe or reelection.- The claseiflcation of
defects and acceptable quality levels (AQL~s) of ORD-SIP-S6 shell
be used as the basis for acceptance or reJectlon of en inspection
lot.
4.3 Insoection.- Inspectlon shall be performed in accordance
with Specification 52-O-1, ORD-SIP-S6, and this specification.
4.4 Gadng.
4.4.1 Firing Dln protrusion.- Each machine g~l shall be
gagad to determine conformance with firing pin protrusion re-
quirement. The guns shell be 8aged before end after the firing
tests. Any gun not meeting this requirement shaLl be rejected.
4.4.2 Heads~ace.- Each gun shall be gaged to determine
that the specified headspace requirement has been met. The guns
shall meet this requirement before and after proof-firing, after
each 4,000 rounds in the endurance test, and upon completion of
the endurance test without further adjustment. Any gun not
meetingthis requirement shell be re~ected.

4.5 Teeta.- Teata ehall be performed in accordance with

4.5.1 Proof-firing test.-
Each aseembled machine gun and
each spare barrel, barrel extension, and bolt ehall be proof-
flred using one caliber .30 Ml high pressure test cartridge fez!
each gun or part teated.
4.5.1.1 Any etoppage or failure of any part ehall be
cauee for rejeotion of the gun or of the part being tested.
The chamber and the bore of the barrel shall be gaged after
proof-firing to deteruiinecompliance with the requlraments apec-
lfled herein end on the drawings.
If the parts specified above
are found acceptable, proof marka shall be stampedin the loca-
tione specified on the drawings.
1.5.2 F1.mctionflrim teat.- All weapons that have auc-
ceasfilly completed the specified proof-flrlng teat shall be
function fired according to the following echedule.
4.5.2.1 The first 100 guns produced under each contract
shall be fired 100 rounds each. Firing shall be in interrupted
bursts except that one continuous burst of 25 rounds shall be
fired from each weapon.
4.5.2.2 Every tenth gun.produced thereafter shall be
fired 75 rounds each with not less than 20 rounds fired in one
continuous burst.
4.5.2.3 All other guns produced shall be fired a total
of 35 rounds each In interrupted or continuous bursts.
1.5.2.1 Any breakage or malfunction ofany of the guaa
shall be cause for rejection.of the gun being function fired.
In addition. if the breakage or malfunction occurs in a weapon
being flrea in the 35 round.schedule, the next 10 weapons
shall be function fired In the 75 round schedule as specified
herein. If these 10 weapons pass the 75 round test successfully,
the origin%l schedule specified herein shall be reapplied.
4.5.2.)+.1 Malfunction or atoppagea resulting from de-
fectlve ammunition o??llnka in any firing teat shall not ba
charged agalnat the weapon being teated.
4.5.3 Rate of flre.-
The cyclic rate of fire shell be de-
termined for every tenth gun produced,
the test shall be conducted
concurrently with the function firing test.

shell be within the ranges specified herein. Failure to meet
the cyclic rate requirements shall be causa for determining
the cyclic rate on the next ten guns. If the 10 guns pass the
test successfully, the test procedure shell revert back to sche-
dule specified above. Failure to meet the cyclic rate with each
of the 10 guns shall reject the lot represented by the test
weapons.
4.5.4 Endurance teet.-
Thg fjndurencetest shall be con.
ducted according to the following schedule.
4.5.4.1 One gun from the first 100 weapons produced shall
oe subjected to an endurance test of 10,000 rounds. Firing
shall be at the rate of approximately 50 rounds per minute,
in bursts not exceeding $?0rounde. The test weapon shall be
allowed to air-cool for 5 minutes after each 500 rounds and for
10 minutes after each 1000 rounds.
4.5.4.2 men the test weapon rapreaenting the initial 100
guns hae succeaefully passed the above teet, one gun from each
succeeding tenth lot of 500 weapona shall aleo be fired in the
10,000 round schedule specified in 4.5.4.1.
4.5.~.5 All other lote shall be tested by aubject~~ ~;:

every 500 xwunds but no parta shall be altered or raplaced ex-
cept for broken parte or those parte worn to the extent of un-
serviceability. A record shall be kept of each replacement.
4.5.4.5 The lot from which the teet weapon was drawn shall
be acceptable if the test waapon withatenda the endurance test
within the limits apeciiiedin table I.
k.5.4.6 The test Weapone eubmitted to tha endurance tast
shall not be accepted by the Government until they have been
thoroughly reconditioned by the contractor.
4.5.5 Accuracy test.- One gun froa each lot of gum shall
be submitted to an accuracy teat. The gun shall be mounted on
a fixed reet approved by the inspector or on a standard caliber
.~O tripod mount faataned to a eulteble base. Tha gun shall be
fired on a 100 foot range to determine compliance with accuracy
requirements. Gune which fail to meet thla requirement shall
oe rejected end the lot shell be screened for the defect. One
additional gun from the same lot shall then be tested for
accuracy with the lot accepted or rejected on the performance
Of this second gun.

Retests.- 4.6. Weapons reJected in any inspection or test,
except in the endurance test, may be conditioned ond resubmit-

ted for the inspection or teat in which failure oocurred.
The
Government inspector.may, in addition, eubject the resubmitted
guns to such other tests as he deems neceesary.

tioned for the feilure or failures.
11.6.1 A retest ehall be allawed in the case of guns re-
jected beoause of failure in the endurance test unless, in the
opinion of the Government inspector, the failure or failures in-
dicate serious defects in the lot of guns. In such a caee, a
retest shall be made only if authorized by the contracting of-
ficer and after the entire lot hae been reconditioned where net.
e.scary. In the event that a retest ie made, the Government in-
spector shall take at random from the rejected lot a weapon
to be subjected to the same endurance test. Failure of the
weapon in retest shall be cause for final rejection of the lot.
!4.7 Final acceotan~ - The weapons shall be finally ac-
cepted after having paeaed the inspection end tests specified
herein, been stamped with the inapectorts etemp and with the
Ordnance Inspection Stamp, and packed for shipment as specified
herein.

Weapone.- The assembled weapons shall be prepared for
a~fied in Specification MIL-P.12362.
5.2 Spare parts.-
Spare parts shall be packaged end
packed in accordance with the spare parts packaging drawing
furnished by the contracting officer.

6. NOTES
6.1 OrderinR data. Procurement doCumOntB should specify
the following:
a. Title, number, end date of this specificat.ton.
b. Title, number, and date of applicable drawings.
C. List of Spara parts, when reqa.ired. (see 3.3.)
d. Site of inspections end tests.
e. Spare parts packaging drawings. (See 5.2.)

6.3 Lubrication. Lubrication Order L09-244 ehould be
fumiehed _Ehecontractor to facilitate correct lubrication.
6.4 Safety durinu firing. Cara is essential to assure
safety during firing. Tha chamber and bore should be dry, clean,
end free of obstructions. Proof cartridge ehould be ahakan to
varify that the powder la loose before using. In the event of
a hangfira, the aotion of tha gun should not ba opened for at
least 30 aeconde, end then should be opened rapidly by meene of
a lanyard taking precaution for the eafety of parnonnal.
6.5 Defective ammunition. If defective ammunition of any
type is encountered in any firing teat, the Commanding Officer,
Frankford Arsenal, should be notified end samplee submitted for

examination and information.
6.6 Defective belt links. If defective belt links are
encountered in any firing tea&, the Commanding Officer, Rock
Island Arsenal, ehould be notified and eemples submitted for
examination and information.
Notice: This specification, together with specification
and drawings pertaining to It and bearing a NOTICEn of eimllar
reatrictione, ie intended for use only in connection with pro-
curement by the United Statea Government, end shall not be re-
produced either wholly or in part excapt when authorized in con-
nection with Government procurement, nor ba used for any other
purposa except when specifically authorized by the Chiaf of
Ordnance.
