Peter Max
Peter Max was born in Berlin in 1937. The following year, he went with his mother and
father to Shanghai, China. From there on, he traveled all over the world going to Tibet, Israel,
South Africa, India and Italy, learning different painting styles as he went. When he was 16, he
then went to Paris then New York City. He attended the Art Students League. Many of Maxs
artwork involves human and animal rights, ecology, and a natural lifestyle. His artwork is often a
primary color scheme or a complementary color scheme. Some artwork he made was made in
protest of the events of the 1960s, like the Peace Sign which was made in protest of the Vietnam
War. He also made works in response to the September 11, 2001 attacks and the money he made
from these works went the September 11 Fund, the Twin Towers Fund, and the Pentagon
Survivors Fund. Peter Max made artwork that reflected the emerging youth culture of the 1960s
and still makes amazing colorful artwork today.
