Title: Newspaper Article about an event in the Story


Estimated Time: 1 hour
Lesson Objective: Students are to investigate and report on a major
event in the story Queenie with particular attention on the newspaper
article genre and structure. Using quotes and emotive language to report
on the facts of the event as well as provide an opinion on the event.

Learning Experience/Lesson Outline:
(e)read the story of Queenie if needed. *f students recall the story)
line well+ this step doesn#t need to be completed in full.
,ave the photocopy of each page&event in the story available for
students at the front of the classroom.
-rite an e.ample of a newspaper article particular focus on 'ey
elements and components of a newspaper article.
Allow students /0 minutes for students to write+ edit+ proof)read and
publish their newspaper article.
(emind students about proof reading+ spelling+ grammar and using
their dictionary to ma'e sure they have everything correct before
producing their 1nal draft of their newspaper article.
2efore moving onto the ne.t lesson+ use the remaining time to have
students who feel comfortable to rear out their newspaper article.
As' the student to justify why the reported on the event in that
particular way and too' that particular stance. Spar' a conversation
about 3opinion# and 3facts# and whether all information we read is
the truth or simply the author#s opinion.
*f time permits+ show e.amples of the same event report in two very
di4erent ways. 5iscuss critical literacy and how students should
always question what they read+ the motive and purpose behind it.
,ow does this relate to the story of Queenie.
Newspaper article can then have a picture added to them and can
then be laminated and put up around the classroom.
A possible follow)up lesson on critical literacy and authenticity of
reporting and news.
