Galera Members: Ranilo Magboo Edmar Maratas David Marasigan Experiment No. 7 Acid-Base Titrations: Analysis of Antacid Tablets I. Objectives a. To learn the technique of acid-base titrations b. To compare the efficiency of commercially available antacids by looking at their wt. of HCl/wt. of antacid values. II. Material and Reagents A. Materials B. Reagents 250 mL Erlenmeyer flask Standard 0.1 M HCl solution Base burette Standard 0.1 M NaOH solution Acid burette antacid tablets (preferably white) Medicine dropper Phenolphthalein indicator Mortar and pestle Analytical balance 100 mL graduated cylinder III. Procedure
Crush two antacid tablets in a mortar and pestle. Get the actual weight of the crushed antacid and transfer them in two separate 250 mL Erlenmeyer flasks. Add 50.0 mL of 0.1 M HCl to the antacid and let it dissolve as much as possible. Add 2 drops of phenolphthalein indicator into the mixture and mix thoroughly. Titrate the antacid mixture with 0.1 M of NaOH until the soultion turns to a faint pink color. Do at least 2 trial.
wt. of HCl = MW HCL [(volume in liter HCl ) (molarity HCl) - (volume in liter NaOH ) (molarity NaOH )]
Calculate the weight of HCl that reacted with the lg of antacid tablet.
