Questions for Monday, September 29:

1. Find one example of each of the following:

A " magic three" passage
An example of referent usage

For each of the above, reference the page(s), and describe how and why they
are (or are not) effective. (Make sure to mark it with a sticky note as well).


Foreshadowing is a literary device by which the writer drops subtle hints to the
reader about what will happen later as the plot unfolds.

2. Find five examples of foreshadowing. Write down the page number and the
sentence underlining the foreshadowing. What is the context of this
foreshadowing, and what event is being foreshadowed? (Please also mark them
with your sticky notes).



Remember, as you read your novel use sticky notes to help you to keep
track the following:
(You will be given time to discuss these and other questions with your novel
study group.)

Find at least ten words (throughout the whole book) of which you are not sure of
the exact meaning.

1. Write down the sentence and underline the word.
2. Write what you think the word means.
3. Look up the exact meaning.
4. Write what you think the word means in the context found.
5. Write your own sentence using this word.

(You may choose some words that are "made-up words.")
