Narrator: Its a colorless winter daycold
and gray. The students in Mr. Bonnets
class think that spring will never arrive.
They gaze out of the windows at the frozen
ground, not paying much attention to the
lesson.
Mr. Bonnet: OK, whos going to read next?
Sally?
Sally: No way! Uh, I mean, sore throat.
Sorry!
Mr. Bonnet: Hmm. Show me your doctors
note after class, Sally. Mortimer, how about
you?
Narrator: Mortimer jumps.
Mortimer: Um. Actually, my Aunt Meggie
wont let me read aloud.
Narrator: This unexpected news captures
the classs attention.
Mr. Bonnet: Thats ridiculous. Everyone
reads.
Mortimer: I can read, I just cant read
aloud. Sorry.
Mr. Bonnet: Mortimer, if you plan to pass
this class, you will read aloud. Starting
now.
Mortimer: But...
Narrator: Mr. Bonnet picks up his
detention slips. Mortimer clears his throat
nervously and starts to read aloud.
Mortimer: It was a beautiful spring day
and the robins were...
Sally: Hey! Whered that come from?
Narrator: Birds ll the classroom and
students start shouting. Mortimer looks in
shock at the empty desk next to him. His
friend Zach had vanished.
