Introduction AISM is an IB PYP school. PYP is considered to be a constructivist curriculum. In short, this means that children construct meaning from central ideas around over-riding themes. In the primary school we use teacher-guided inquiry in order to build the important skills and concepts needed for life-long learning.
Home learning in a PYP school aims to be constructivist in its format in order to support the on-going learning that happens within the school walls. It should also be differentiated in regard to each students abilities and needs.
Purpose To foster lifelong learners by: Promoting an understanding of the school programme through activities that develop, enhance, extend or practise classroom skills and concepts. Promoting and developing independent learning and study skills. Allowing time to reflect and develop reflection skills. Encouraging and developing self-initiated inquiry and action.
Time frame Home work will be assigned only on Monday through Thursday. Over weekends students are required to read. Expectations for each grade (excepting ELC) are calculated using the formula Age x 5 minutes. Therefore allocated time-frames are as follows: ELC - 10 minutes K 25 minutes G1 30 minutes G2 35 minutes Grade 3 40 minutes Grade 4 45 minutes Grade 5 50 minutes
Parents role Provide a quiet area for your child to complete their home learning. Parents have a supportive role. Clarification, discussion and extension of students wonderings are all part of this role. Teaching and reteaching are the realms of teachers. Should an activity be deemed too difficult, the student should stop. The parents may then communicate directly with the classroom teacher so that reteaching may take place. Be involved with recreational reading tasks. Remember instructional reading happens at school. Books should be readable and meaningful for all students. Make sure your child is thorough and careful when completing work.
