Analysis of Same Love By Makclemore and Ryan Lewis ft Mary Lambert
Sexuality is one of the main themes in Same Love. In the first sentence, Mackelmore says, When I
was in the third grade, I thought that I was gay, because I could draw, my uncle was, and I kept my room
straight. (Makclemore 1-2) Macklemore is telling us, the audience, how he heard stereotypes and
thought that because he fit into some of the categories, he was gay, or different. In a different line,
Macklemore says, And you can be cure with some treatment and religion. Man made rewiring of a
predisposition, playing God, America the brave still fears what we do not know and God loves all his
children is somehow forgotten. (Macklemore 12-16). In these few lines, Macklemore has said what
most people are trying to do to homosexuals and how they believe that with religion and some
medicine, they will be cured. Macklemore has also pointed out how America claims to be brave, but is
still scared to accept new things. He believes that no one should play God because God loves all of his
people. When the singer Mary Lambert starts to sing, her very first line is I cant change, even if I tried.
(Lambert 19-20) Mary Lambert is a lesbian and she knows that she cannot change how she feels, even if
she tries. This line also tells us that she has tried to change and be like everybody else, but she could not.
