West Suffolk College. Id say I was quite the film fanatic. (Only reason I took media because I thought Id watch a lot of films.) My favorite genre is horror. I like horrors with my ages group or a family as I find these characters most relatable. I also find it easier to relate to a male actor but I do enjoy some female eye candy in the film. I expect a certain level of quality when watching a horror, Im not easily frightened by the storyline but I enjoy the thrill and the suspense. When watching a horror I rely on the audio to tell me what to feel. Sound is vital for creating an atmosphere and establishing the genre. The music needs to be noticeable but not distracting. Keep it simple and climatic I say. Music that is recognizable is also important. For example, insidious tiptop through the tulips. The storyline of a horror can be simple but effective if it sticks to the classical conventions of a horror. My favorite plots revolve around possession and demons. Although I dont enjoy watching the same ghost story again and again. Originality is essential. I expect acting in horrors to be professional and believable. Make up is an extremely vital part of the believability of the film. I despise when makeup is overdone and looks fake. Hence my strong dislike for the first couple of Saw films. This allows applies to props too. I have a weekend job at a local caf and get paid minimum wage but I will always splash out on a decent horror in the cinema. This includes large salted popcorn and coke. Ive watched a lot of horrors and Ive found that the key for capturing my attention is a good opening sequence. I want to be on edge within the first couple of minutes. I mainly watch the big production horrors. However being Suffolk born and bread Ill always watch a British horror if its on. I find British horrors more relatable as well.
Most horrors have a predictable plot: a scary beginning, a boring middle where nothing happens and a scary ending which always ends happily. Therefore I thoroughly enjoy a horror with a twist or alternative ending. Such as The house at the end of the street. I really didnt expect that plot and I couldnt have predicted it. My personal pet hate for horrors is when a-long-awaited action scene finally comes but you cant see anything because its filmed outside or inside but too dark. Lighting is so vital, darkness is a classic convention of horror and is needed for setting the mood but too much darkness will ruin the affect.
